“Ponder me this; what’s the best way to make a boy and a girl who are already in love get serious about each other?” Tracy dropped that comment at the lunch table, then looked around to see if anyone noticed.
“Ponder me?” Kate gave Tracy a weird look. She heaved a sigh. “Can’t you talk like everyone else?”
Tracy heaved a sigh back at her. “No. I can’t.”
“It’s suppose to be ‘riddle me this’, right?” Justin asked Gene.
“I don’t know. Seems like ‘what do you think’ would be better.” Gene barely stopped shoveling in the hot lunch from his tray to say it.
“Guys, you’re all missing the point!”
“The point is the only reason we’re eating lunch together is to come up with a name for the band.” Bruce looked pissed, but he always did. “My people are waiting for me.”
“Yeah. Our friends are getting kind of mad at us for spending all our lunches with you guys,” Kate said.
Emma, sitting next to her, nodded like a bobble head, but her eyes were empty. Maybe Tracy should do something about her too, but first came Lisa and Gene.
“He’s got a valid point,” Justin said. He looked over at a table full of band nerds like he would rather be there.
“I still think we should go with Kate’s Kats.” Kate grinned.
All the guys made forget-that noises.
“I l-l-like Bitter Harvest.” Emma actually had the nerve to say. “B-because it’s the name of our first song.”
“No. It’s alright for a song name, but for a band it could be bad luck.” Justin looked serious when he said it. Funny, Tracy hadn’t thought he was superstitious before.
“How about Harvest Moon,” Kate said.
“I think there’s already a band called that.”
“No, that’s a song. You’re thinking Shaman’s Harvest.”
“This is the pits,” Tracy muttered, slumping over her lasagna surprise. Why had she thought these people would give her a good idea for something to do with Lisa and Ben?
“Hey, did you hear Passion Pit is playing the Orpheum this weekend?” Justin grinned. “I want to go, but the tickets are sold out.”
“Passion Pit.” The name alone appealed to Tracy. Ben seemed more of a Pearl Jam kind of guy, but Lisa would like it. “Perfect.” All she had to do was find someone who had tickets.
“We are not calling ourselves that.” Gene gave her a look. “How about Wrong Word.”
“Like Malapropism?” It would be Justin who came up with that word. “Malaprop. I like the sound of that.”
“Yeah. Me, too,” Bruce said.
“Well, sure. I guess. Especially if Tracy’s writing the lyrics.” Kate grinned. Emma nodded.
“So it’s settled. The band’s name is Malaprop.”
Tracy groaned. “Somehow I get the feeling it’s all my fault.”
It would have been nice if they hadn’t all laughed.
