Chesapeake by James A Michener p.326

Rosalind, who is remodeling her husband’s house, has gone to the home of the local carpenter to see what she might shoot for. She ends up talking to the matriarch of the family. The matriarch, a Quaker, tells Rosalind all kinds of things about the area and about the family she’s married in to, including about her husband’s illegitimate children.

“I came to see your house,” Rosalind said as she bade the old Quaker goodbye, “but what I saw was my own.”

I’m about a third of the way through the book now. This is my first Michener read. It’s like reading a living history – a telling of a location’s past as seen through the people who lived there.
