We watch her waddle into her house. She has grown so large she only fits in pajamas. She carries her meals into the bedroom, watching TV there and waiting for the welfare check. A job? Why bother? It isn’t like she’d ever done anything with her life, now or before.

Please, please, please do NOT assume that this is a reflection of my attitude toward welfare or welfare recipients. This is merely a look at my next door neighbor. In this one, specific case – colored by a series of unpleasant and unnecessary conflicts and some of Mr. Al’s curmudgeonly comments – this is what I see.
