“Drew! Arrest this guy!” Miranda jabbed her finger at Mike. To think the jerk was harboring a known criminal and had the nerve to look down on her for having a few late fees at the video store where he worked!
“On what grounds?” Mike puffed up as he said it, clearly thinking he was in the right.
He might have been because Drew’s expression said pretty much the same thing. Didn’t matter. This was Miranda’s chance at a little revenge. She wasn’t going to pass it up, even if all she could do was hassle him a little.
“You mean besides harboring a fugitive?” Miranda took a deep breath, stalling for time while she figured out a better attack. Then she took another breath. “How about for smoking pot?”
“Pot? What are you talking about?” Mike leaned back, glancing around like he was going to make a run for it. Well tough. Miranda was in the doorway. He wouldn’t make it past her.
“I know what I smell. Don’t you smell it, Drew?” Miranda shifted her weight, closing any possible gaps in the doorway.
Drew took a sniff, nose in the air. “Now that you mention it, yes, I smell something.”
“No! You couldn’t!” Mike waved a hand in front of him is if that would clear the air.
“Maybe we should search….” Miranda suggested to Drew, more than half hoping. She’d love to see him toss the place, but he wasn’t taking the bait. He shook his head.
“We have more important matters.”
“Oh.” So disappointing. It didn’t seem to Miranda that Mike had suffered nearly enough. Just then Carl came out of the back room in a hurry. At first Miranda thought he’d go after Vin, who was tackling the man they had all come to arrest in the first place, but Carl caught Miranda’s eye and came straight for her. Goody.
“What’s going on here,” Carl demanded.
“I still think you should arrest Mike. And from the smell of things, maybe Carl too.” Her words seemed to have no effect on Drew, but that was normal for him. She was so glad Vin loved her instead. Loving Drew would have been a lot harder. “At least they are accessories, aren’t they? Oh come on, Drew. Let me put handcuffs on them. Pretty please?”
Drew shot a dirty look at her, let out a sigh of exasperation, and pulled out his cell phone.
“You have no right to come into my home,” Carl said, sounding twice as pompous as usual. He grabbed Miranda’s arm and tried to shove her backwards. Miranda shoved back.
“This is Special Agent in Charge Andrew Banks…. Right, with the FBI…. Yes, we spoke earlier…. I need backup.” He gave the address.
By the time he’d disconnected, Miranda had her hands around Carl’s neck and Mike was pulling on her arm. She thought Drew would yell at her, at least jump into the fray. Instead he rolled his eyes heavenward, then pulled handcuffs from his pocket.
He dangled them in front of her. She let go of Carl’s neck to swipe at them, but Drew kept them just out of her reach.
“I’ll let you cuff them, but that’s all you do. Got that?”
“Yeah, yeah. I won’t read them their rights or knock them around much. Now give me the stupid cuffs!”
He gave her a warning look before tossing them to her. She used a trick Vin had shown her a while back to twist Carl’s arm behind him. Cuffing him was easy, despite Mike’s half-hearted pummeling.
Mike was harder. She only had the one set of cuffs that she’d used on Carl, and was pretty sure Drew would have given her a second set if he’d had them. She ended up taking Carl’s leather belt and chasing Mike around. It was almost as bad as a Three Stooges movie. When she had both men down, she went to the kitchen after Drew to find out why he hadn’t helped her.
He and Vin had the red headed man between them, headed her way.
“Hey, Drew. Why did you just walk away when I was fighting off two guys?”
“I knew you could handle them.”
His words pleased her, but she suspected there was some sort of cenicisure underneath. Still, he wasn’t yelling. She deserved being yelled at. Mike and Carl might be jerks, but they hadn’t really done anything that bad. She straightened her back and smiled.
“Yeah. I could. Couldn’t I?”
“By the way, Miranda. How do YOU know what pot smells like?”
