“Are you sure this is the right place?” Miranda was completely unimpressed by the rock quarry. Not that she’d been expecting a picnic table or anything.
“Fits with the direction he was headed when I got out of the camper.” Vin looked around, too, but probably not with comfort in mind.
He had insisted that Miranda and Suzie stay in the car while he and Drew went into the quarry to make sure they were the first to arrive.
“What are you looking for?” Miranda tried to see the heap of stone chips through her true love’s eyes.
“A safe place to set up. Drew, how about just in the trees over there.”
“What? Behind that bush over there? Looks like it should have a good view. Sure. Suzie?” He lugged a couple of folding chairs up the incline to a higher spot on the hill.
“Got it.” Suzie carried a picnic basket.
Miranda had two more folding chairs and Vin had a large cooler. The two of them fell into step behind the other two. They chattered about the weather, mosquitoes, and the likelihood of a serial killer dropping in on them while they set up in the shade of the woods.
“Do you really think we will have to stay here all day?” Miranda tried not to think about the lack of a restroom.
“Isn’t that what we agreed on last night?”
“Well, yeah.” She settled in a chair between Vin and Suzie with Drew on Suzie’s other side. Vin handed her a beer. Suzie handed her a sandwich. “Thanks.”
“He could just be playing a head game with us,” Drew said. He was the designated driver, so he opened a can of Monster instead of a beer. “Not to profile or anything, but that’s what his kind does.”
Vin nodded in easy agreement. “Just remember. If he shows up, you two keep hidden. Let us do the heavy lifting.”
“We just record it on our phones. I know, I know.” Miranda waved her smartphone.
“I can’t say it’s much of a view, but really we lucked out on the weather. This is nice.” Suzie bit into her sandwich. “I don’t mind staying here all day.”
“Especially if it means we can get this over with and go back to living normal lives,” Miranda said with feeling.
Vin had just put his feet up on the cooler when his phone rang. He talked in hushed tones for a short call so she couldn’t quite catch what he was saying. When he was done he shoved the phone into his pocket and stood up.
“Pack it in, folks. Our perp has already left the country.”
