Suzie’s House 536 : Courtesy Call

Drew watched Vin call in the incident. In fact, Vin dragged Drew into the den and used the speaker phone to make the call.

“You’re saying you saw a dead body in the subject’s camper,” Vin’s contact said. “Are you sure he was dead?”

“His head was missing and blood covered the floor,” Vin said dryly.

The FBI agent on the other end of the line grunted awkward acknowledgment. Then a long pause had Drew leaning forward, fighting the urge to wring something resembling a concern for justice from this desk jockey.

“Well, we knew he was dangerous,” the agent finally said. “We’ll do everything we can, of course. Though frankly, even if you bring back proof we will have a hard time taking this one to court.” His voice trailed off.

“Don’t you want to get my deposition?”

“No, I think not. We’ll have to take you off the case, of course. It’s clearly too dangerous for a civilian, even one as highly trained as yourself.”

Vin’s eyes flashed and his jaw flexed, but he didn’t say any of the words Drew had heard before when anyone belittled him like this. It made Drew wonder just how much of this Vin had been putting up with. Before his melt down, Drew had been the only contact in the bureau that Vin would work with. Drew felt a twinge of regret, but quickly put it aside.

“I’m no safer off the case than on,” Drew said through his teeth.

“I’m sure that isn’t the case. Just lay low. We’ll take care of everything. We’ll still send your payment, if that’s what you’re worried about.”

“No, I’m not. This guy isn’t just going away and you know it.”

“We’re hoping to deport him….” The agent didn’t sound very hopeful.

“Even if you…” Vin shut up when Drew put a hand on his wrist and shook his head.

It was better to not tell the agent that they would still be hunting for this guy even if they weren’t officially on the case. It would only put him in the kind of bind that Drew had often suffered under.

A minute later the man had hung up. Clearly they would be getting no help from that quarter. Worse, because of jurisdiction issues they weren’t likely to get much help from any other authorities either. Not until too late, anyway.

“Why do I get the feeling I was just told to not worry my pretty little head?” Vin cursed under his breath.
