I chopped it all off – about 20 inches of hair. Now I have what The Girl calls “an old lady afro.” These are times when I notice the difference.
1. For the first hour I was so light headed I thought I’d pass out.
2. When I turn my head fast.
3. When I glance in a mirror I have to stop and convince myself it’s really me.
4. When I put on a sweater I automatically reach up to free hair that is no longer there.
5. When what little is left around my neck and ears brushes my skin I check to see if my non existent bun is falling down.
6. I frequently catch myself running my fingers through my hair. I haven’t been able to do that in many years.
7. Before going to bed I still reach up to braid it. No longer possible.
8. First thing in the morning I reach up to upbraid it.
9. I no longer have to adjust my pillow to accommodate the braid.
10. I feel breezes on my neck now.
11. I no longer have to worry about the ever growing list of hair care products that make my head itch.
12. I keep finding hair rubber bands around the house that I can no longer use.
13. I love it, but I’m already planning to grow it out again.
