Right before we left Flores to return to Bali, we stopped off at a fish market. This is, apparently, a regular part of the tour that some of the tourists have complained about. The market in question is not for tourists. There are a lot of fish. And it can be a bit odoriferous. It wasn’t any worse than I would expect, but not something you want to be smelling in an enclosed airplane a little later.
The variety was rather extensive. I have no idea what most of the fish were. Some even the local tour guide couldn’t identify. Most of it was dried. Much was intended for consumption in the whole region – not just that one town.
So basically the Komodo portion of our trip started at a local market and ended at a local market. Well, almost. The caves came first, but the vegetable market was right afterward.
From there we Flew in to Denpasar. This was the airport where we had the most problems getting in and out based on which way the volcanic ash was blowing. I thought we might have a problem, but we made it without incident.
That night we went on an excursion to a mall. I picked up some local music CDs. The mall was huge and full of goodies ranging from tourist kitsch to groceries. Everything was all shiny and new. It was a far cry from the fish market. The next day we few around a typhoon on the way back to the US.
It has now been a year and two months since I got back from this trip. It feels odd to say farewell to my Indonesia trip.
