Kate was sitting in the kitchen with a bowl of cereal in front of her when the text message came from Alisha.
‘You are still in that band?’
“Well, duh,” Kate muttered. You’d think her friend would have been more impressed by the fact she had a boyfriend, or that the flowers were a wedding bouquet. It wasn’t like Alisha hadn’t already heard about the band.
Another text came in on top of the first. “Is Emma still in the band?”
“Yes.” Kate actually tapped out the whole word before hitting send. Sometimes she only typed in “Y”. Then she added another, “yes” because it had really been two questions.
“No text messaging at the table,” Kate’s mom said as she passed behind Kate’s chair with a pitcher of orange juice.
“Moooom.” Kate didn’t care if she sounded like she was whining, even though someone was bound to comment.
“Mooom,” Her little brother imitated her.
“This is important!”
“Did someone die?” Her mother put the juice in the middle of the table.
“Well, no….”
“Is someone in the hospital?”
“No….”
“On their way to the hospital?”
“No, but…”
“Then you’re attention should be here with us.” Her mom snatched the phone out of Kate’s hands and slipped it into her pocket. “Reflect on your behavior.”
“NO!!!!” Kate lurched to her feet, but her father flipped down the newspaper he was reading and gave her a look, so she subsided.
“Hah, hah.” Her brother hammed it up.
“Mom! That was important to me.”
“She’s such a drama queen,” her little brother said. “Well. You are.”
“I am not.”
“Are too.”
“Not.”
“To. To, to, to.”
“Both of you, settle down.” Their father shook the newspaper in his hands as a warning.
Little brother stuck his tongue out.
“Yes, Papa.” Kate turned her attention to her cereal. Anything she said now would be a waste of breath. She’d get her phone back as soon as she was ready to leave the table. Then she was going to text everyone and tell them all about what a rotten family she had.
