Suzie's House

Donny didn’t like the look of this new guy. He had “cop” written all over him. But it was too late to hide the evidence. Donny had been toking for at least an hour. Pot smoke filled the air of his employer’s living room.

Donny glanced at Ned, his employer. No reaction. None from the other guy either. They all just stood around the couch with their heads in the cloud.

Well, he had his green card, anyway. If this cop guy tried to pull something, Donny would just prove it was medicinal. No one needed to know the doctor who prescribed it was a friend.

When nothing more happened after they shook hands, Donny looked at the other guy his employer brought in. He seemed nicer, and even smiled when they shook hands. Ned, his dweeby employer, looked pointedly at the patient.

“Oh. Walter. Riiiiight.” Donny nodded. He got it now. This cop guy who barely wanted to touch him was probably here about the old guy. “Where you been? I’ve been looking for you.”

“Gave you the slip, did I?” Walter hitched his pants up and smiled, obviously proud of himself.

“Yeah. Gave me the slip.” Again. If this kept up, Donny would probably lose another job. But Walter wasn’t so docile as he looked.

He took his physical therapy without a whimper. He wasn’t picky about his food or anything, either. It was only when his Alzheimer’s kicked in that things got dicey. His war time flashbacks could be scary, and this constant game of hide and seek tired Donny out.

Good job? Bad job? Donny could never decide. He just didn’t want to lose it.

“I noticed that my grandfather has been giving you the slip more frequently, lately.” Ned looked at Donny through narrowed eyes.

Great. Here it came. He was about to get fired.

“So I hired these gentlemen to help you keep an eye on him. Next time he gives you the slip, you are to call them immediately.”

Immediately? That was not a good rule to inflict on him. There were plenty of times when Donny didn’t’ realize the old guy was gone for a long time. Still, saying yes was a lot better than getting fired.

“So, I want you to tell them how he gets away from you.” Ned came around the couch to sit in the chair facing him. There was a wry twist to his mouth that made Donny uncomfortable.

“Yeah. This would help.” The two guys took seats and stared at him. Though it was the nice guy who spoke, the cop seemed the same. “How did he get away and where does he usually turn up?”

“Yeah. I’d love to know how I did it.” With a grin, Walter also sat down.

Donny looked around the seating area. He felt like he was being questioned by a police investigation. Still, he sat. The pot hadn’t really done much to his head. Just made him feel better. So he should be able to do this.

“Yeah. Sure. I’ll tell you everything.”
