1. We visited Cathedral Grove on Vancouver Island. it’s one of the few remaining old-growth forests in North America.
2. It’s pretty popular. You simply follow the highway until you reach a widening in the road, then park. There’s no parking lot.
3. No Visitor Center either, but there ware some signs and a log cabin style latrine.
4. The paths were all well maintained and gentle as well as short.
5. But they tended to loop around a lot.
6. Taking us ever deeper into the darkly woods.
7. At the expense of some kindling. These downed logs came to about shoulder height.
8. All paths lead to the main attraction – the islands largest and oldest tree.
9. Which of course demanded a photo op that generated a line. All strangers have been photoshoped, but should still look human.
10. Since we’re down around the roots, we went around some interesting ones.
11. Or, in some cases, over.
12. Parts of the forest looked positively primordial.
13. But most made me feel right at home.
