“Tracy was raped in Las Vegas,” Lisa said is if that was the kind of thing she had a right to say.
“I was not!” Tracy looked from Lisa to Gene, willing him to ignore Lisa.
“How can you say that? It was vicious. You had finger shaped bruises on your neck.”
“That’s a lie.” Tracy caught herself holding a hand over her neck where she’d nearly been strangled. “It was two weeks between when Mom and I left Las Vegas and when we got here. Even if there had been bruises, they’d have been gone by then.”
“They were yellow and green, but I could still see them. Besides, I know the whole story.” Lisa lifter her chin and narrowed her eyes. It was a prissy look that made Tracy want to slap her. “I overheard my mom and yours talking about it. Aunt Cherry said there were muddy footprints all over the apartment and when she found you, you were all beat up and about to stab a boy you knew from school with a butcher’s knife.”
“He wasn’t a boy I knew from school. He was a high school boy who lived on the floor above us. And it was a letter opener, not a butcher’s knife.”
Tracy glanced at Gene to find a horrified expression on his face.
“It’s not like that! He tried, but he didn’t succeed. I still have my virginity.” She turned on Lisa. “You had no right to say anything about it. It has nothing to do with what’s going on between Gene and me.”
“How can you say that,” Lisa said.
“It’s completely different! I don’t scream, and throw things, and claw at Gene. Right? Right? It’s completely different.”
“But… you stiffen up. Every time I try to do anything more than kiss you, you act like I’m doing something wrong. It makes me feel like you’re afraid of me. I started to think maybe you should be.”
“No! It’s nothing like that. I’m never afraid of you.”
“Really?” Gene walked up to her.
At first she couldn’t tell what he meant to do. Feeling insecure, Tracy took an involuntary step back. Then another. She backed into a wall, and still Gene came toward her. He put a hand on the wall next to her head and leaned forward.
“I don’t ever want to hurt you,” he said in a low voice right next to her ear. “I used to think you were never scared of anything.”
“I’m not!” She started shaking. She couldn’t help herself. The deep vibration of his voice sent chills all through her body. She couldn’t decide if they were good chills or bad chills. She was afraid something would get liberated if he kept it up. She hated anything she didn’t understand like that, but it felt kind of good.
Before she could even begin to explain how she felt, Gene swore, then walked off.
