Since were coming up on one of those days when people like to go out to eat, I thought I’d do a quick overview of restaurants in Mongolia.
1. Sometimes they look like gers. This one was made of wood and was part of our camp in the Gobi Desert.
2. Most of the time we were served multiple courses, but on the last day by the lake, they brought out a smorgasbord. They really pulled out all the stops for it. It was excellent.
3.The ger camp in the park. Notice how artfully the salad was arranged. This was quite common.
4. At our hotel in Ulaanbaatar. I ordered a Caesar salad. Notice in the background there is a platter of bread with three bowls. Each bowl has a bit of butter with a different flavoring.
5. The castle on the left turned out to be the fanciest restaurant on the tour. Often the exteriors didn’t match the interiors, but in this case the restaurant was actually part of the amusement park.
6. This is the salad they served there. It was like a burrito made of lettuce and cucumber.
7. Many of the restaurant interiors had this kind of rustic fashionability to them.
8. The breakfast room in the hotel really impressed me. We had breakfast there several times. Each time I got something different. I even tried conge there.
9. This is what I ate the night I took the video footage that’s on my Welcome page.
10. This was a pretty common kind of salad. Notice the water bottle? They generally provided coffee and tea, but since I can’t drink either I often had to provide my own water. Some people had drink mixes with them. I’d planned on it, but forgot to pack it.
11. On our way to the ger camp in the Gobi Desert, we stopped to eat here. My first thought on stepping inside was that they were hosting prom night.
12. Lasagna. Or their idea of lasagna, anyway. I preferred native food.
13. In the ger camp in the park. Some of the restaurants didn’t just look like gers. They were actually in gers.
