“Ahhhh. That felt goooood.” Miranda rolled over in bed and grinned at Vin. She felt like the cat that ate the cannery. “Happy?”
“Very.”
“I can only think of one thing that would make it better.”
“Hmmm?” He closed his eye, a wisp of a smile on his lips, clearly convinced nothing could be better.
“Ice-cream.”
He lifted his head, looked at her, let it fall back, and groaned. “I’m not up to getting dressed and going down stairs for you. Can you wait a few minutes?”
“Nope,” Miranda said cheerfully. “I’ll get it myself.”
She hopped out of bed and got dressed, wondering if either the Butter Brickel or the Rocky Road would be left. Her mind was so occupied than she almost ran right into Suzie when she opened the door.
“What are you doing?” Miranda stepped back hastily, then realized the hall around her door was filled. Four teenagers plus Suzie… had everyone in the house stood around outside her door listening while she and Vin enjoyed themselves? “What are all of you doing here?”
“Tracy, well… all of us… we were worried about you,” Ben said.
“Worried? What do you mean, worried?”
“Are you all right?” Tracy got up close and looked Miranda over through a squint as if expecting some hideous disease.
“I’m perfectly fine.”
“The two of you were a bit noisy,” Suzie said apologetically.
“Wait. You thought we were hurting each other?”
“Well, yeah.” Everyone in the hall nodded.
Miranda started laughing. She couldn’t help herself. She might very well have picked up a bruise or two, but if so it was entirely her fault. She had pounced on Vin hard and enjoyed every second of it. She laughed so hard she ended up leaning against the door frame.
Vin came up behind her wearing nothing but a pair of jeans.
“What’s going on?”
“They, even Suzie, thought we were beating on each other.” Miranda grinned at him.
“What?” Vin stared in disbelief. Then he, too started laughing.
Suzie grinned in a mixture of relief and reassurance. Ben darted shy glances all around and smiled to himself. Gene looked downright smug. The best was Tracy. She looked like she accidentally swallowed a gold fish. She blinked a few times, her mouth making a wide O. Miranda enjoyed it, but couldn’t resist goading the little do-gooder a bit.
“We were just having…”
“Miranda!” Suzie glared.
“… a good time,” Miranda corrected herself. Then, to make sure the message came across, she wrapped her arms around Vin and gave him a quick kiss on the lips. When she looked at Tracy after that, the girl was blushing furiously.
“You shouldn’t go rushing into things,” Miranda told her. “You could embarrass more than just yourself.”
