Good thing he automatically put his pants on first, or it would have been really, really embarrassing when Ben walking into the room with Lisa.
“Oh! Oh, I’m so sorry.” Lisa went bright red. She put her hand to her face like she’d seen something she shouldn’t have. His BVDs maybe?
Gene put his back to them while he zipped up.
“Sorry, Gene. Just give me a minute. I need to grab something.” Ben dug through a drawer in his desk like it was Gene’s fault for being here.
Well, it was his room. Gene was only a guest who couldn’t leave. At least Ben’s mom had ordered a bed for him. Then he’d have a few square inches to call his own. In the mean while, he wasn’t going to stand here in front of Lisa, getting all uncomfortable and all. He shrugged in his shirt as he headed for the door.
“Nah. You stay. I’ll go.”
“You sure,” Ben asked.
“Yeah.” Gene waved off anything Ben might have said. He didn’t bother to look at either of them as he walked out.
The bathroom. He could have some privacy in the bathroom. Except someone was already there.
Where else could he go? The kitchen, where everyone hung out all the time? The rec room where Vin sat with the remote control in his hand? The dining room where everyone who walked by always had to stop in and ask if anything was wrong?
Living with his dad was easier than this. At least he wasn’t home much, so Gene had the place to himself. And he didn’t have to worry about running into his dad on the street. Like what had happened earlier today.
Right. So… going out wasn’t working for him either.
Gene slumped into the wall. It went thump, but he was too busy groaning to worry about it until Drew came out. That’s right, it was Drew’s room right next to the bathroom at the head of the stairs.
“Oh. Gene. Something the matter?”
Gene shook his head, and shoved off from the wall. Great. Now he’d have to find some other place to be.
“Well, come in here for a minute and give me a hand.” Drew stepped back, and waved Gene into his room.
Well, at least it got him out of the hall.
The room was very orderly, except for the card board boxes. About half a dozen of them were scattered around the room. Drew handed Gene a roll of packaging tape.
“Those two are done. Close them up for me.”
“Sure.” Gene knelt down. The boxes had stuff like books and some clothes and stuff. It looked like Drew was moving or something. Gene tried to pretend he wasn’t curious, but after a while – after he taped up the last box and while I was watching Drew pack the rest – he couldn’t resist. “You’re leaving?”
“Yeah. In a few more days.” Drew’s jaw flexed a little and his lips tightened.
Gene fought off a grin, ‘cause the dude wasn’t likely to appreciate it. But he still couldn’t keep from asking.
“Think I could have your room?”
