Something Old, Something New

Photobucket

Sorry, I couldn’t come up with a NEW Jack and Jill this week. Too busy writing a book. But it occured to me that a lot of people who come to check out Jack and Jill now are new, so I posted a picture from one of the oldest Jack and Jill episodes.

This week’s theme is “new.” I’ll bet you thought it was old.

A Smooth Stone

Meredith picked up a smooth stone from the river bed.

“It’s not like we know nothing,” she says. “For instance, this stone became smooth by tumbling in the stream. We can carbon date it to know the age, and located rocks like it for where it originated.”

“That rock came from my bedroom,” her son says. “I threw it away just now.”

13 Button Images

If you look over on the left sidebar toward the top you will see a grab it button. This is a widget you can put on your own blog that will show the image I have up and link back to my blog. I have several I grabbed from other people’s blogs on my right hand sidebar if you scroll down a bit. What’s cool about mine is that the image changes every so often. People who grab the button widget don’t have to do anything to make the change. It’s something I do. Here are 13 images I have used on that widget.

Suzie’s House 286 : Justin and Emma Practice

Suzie's House

“What are you doing here?” Justin looked scary with his mouth all snarly and eyes narrow.

For a minute, it made Emma nervous – as if there was anything in the world that didn’t make her nervous – but then, maybe it wasn’t a bad thing for Justin to hate Bruce that much.

Killer Scents by Adelle Laudan

location 188 on Amazon cloud reader (which I’m not real happy with. Amazon, I mean. The book is great.)

If anyone were to look through the window he doubted they’d find anything amiss at first glance. There were no blood-splattered walls or signs of struggle. Sandra Bedows appeared to be sleeping peacefully on the couch until one looked a little closer to find a bright pink azalea in her hands and her mouth sewn shut.

NaNoWriMo 2012

Photobucket

It’s National Novel Writing Month again. It’s kind of funny they should call it that when people from all over the world do it at the same time. National? Which nation?

Anyway, the idea is to write a book in November. We’re talking rough draft here. My rough drafts are always really, really rough. I’ve been known to throw the whole thing away and start from scratch. Sometimes more than once.

For instance, last year I worked on a dragon oriented book for NaNo. I’d already written the book once, and had the plot mostly ironed out that way, but had chosen the wrong point of view, so I tossed out the original manuscript entirely, and wrote it for NaNo from scratch. I hit the 50,000 easily enough by the end of the month, but didn’t finish the manuscript until the end of December.

Biopsy

“Eviscerated” probably isn’t how I should answer the question, “How do you feel?” It was just a little medical procedure. That’s what they call it, you know. It doesn’t count as an operation, the way Korea wasn’t a war, just a “police action”. In and out in half a day. Then nothing to do but wait.

“I have loved and hated Edon Bryne,” she said. “I have loved him for his clear eye, honest soul, and blunt speech.” She paused. “I have hated him for his clear eye, honest soul, and blunt speech.”

Doctors and Drums

It was a week of doctors and drums for me. I went in for the kind or routine exam that doctors make you do in order to get your prescriptions refilled and ended up with a colonoscopy. This is not exactly the kind of procedure I look forward to. They keep assuring you that it’ll be fine because even if you’re awake and aware during the exam you won’t remember anything.

Does anyone else find this a touch disturbing?

The prep for it is hard. You spend a day emptying out. That means no eating all day, and drinking a lot of medicine that will make you run to the bathroom. To say I was not looking forward to it was putting it mildly. In the end, it wasn’t that bad. I could go into detail here, but I’m spare you. You’re welcome. 🙂

Over the weekend Mr. Al dragged me off to do African drumming. A local group had brought in someone who originated in West Africa. We went to lessons on Saturday and again Sunday and attended a concert Saturday night. This ate into our NaNo time a bit, but it’s only offered a few times a year, so we didn’t want to miss out. It was a blast!

It occurred to me that these two activities are on polar opposite of social interactions. Drumming is something best done in a group. A lot of songs can’t be played in a satisfactory way without at least one other person to play with, and most have three parts for one kind of drum alone. In Africa, these songs are an integral part of life – often made for certain activities and events. It’s a community thing.

Health care tends to put the victum patient in isolation. First, your pains and conditions are your own. No one else feels your pain. If you don’t say anything, a lot of people will never know. When you do go in for treatment, they put you in a little room by yourself and send individual people – first a nurse, then the doctor – in to see you.

I’ll admit the colonoscopy was a bit more of a group event, as I was obliged to present my back side to the doctor and a flock of nurses/tech/specialists. But then they gave me the nice drugs and I don’t remember the rest, so we’re back to isolation thing. Besides, being surrounded by all these strangers with the right to mess with our body just makes the sense of isolation stronger.

Isn’t that a bit ironic? After all, it’s when you aren’t feeling well that the touch of a loved one means the most.
