The Mistress Diaries by Julianne MacLean.39

He once told me he would treat my heart and body with great care. He was lying, of course, for it was all a very clever, skillful seduction.

Fences in Mongolia

Mongolians are more likely to fence themselves in than they are to fence in their livestock.

New Flame

Theodore: Come to the lab with me, my sweet. I’ll treat you with great respect. I’ll provide all necessary accommodations, twenty-four hour security, the most cutting edge equipment….

Tina: Equipment?!

Theodore: Yes, of course. Autoclave, DNA sequencer, hematology analyzer, P
CR extraction system; I have only the best.

Tina: I’ll never let you take me. I’m warning you, I know jujitsu and a bunch of other stuff. You can’t touch me.

Theodore: Yes, yes. I know I can’t hold a candle to you. More is the pity.

Previously in Jack and Jill: Theodor’s Plans

The theme for this week’s Jack and Jill is candle as suggested by The Boy

Left Behind

The others say that we must fight or lose our way of life.
He’s not so sure.
He hesitates.
Stops to think. Gets
lost in the tangles of justice and practicality
between loneliness and meaning.
When his head clears, the others have already gone.
But not far enough to keep him safe.

13 Pictures of Goats in Mongolia

Goats have not traditionally been a favored animal for nomadic Mongolians. They do too much damage to the roots of plants. However in recent years the lure of high pay for cashmere has lead to a steady increase in goat herds. Now they are all over Mongolia. Although we were fed more beef, we saw far more goats.

Suzie’s House 323 : Brother Blunder

Suzie's House

It was such a simple mistake. Emma forgot she wasn’t allowed to sing. Not anywhere that her brother might hear, at any rate. She came home from the practice room rental audition feeling like someone special.

She imagined herself a diva. Fans would scream and beg for autographs as soon as they saw her. Body guards would surround her and an agent would do everything he could to make her happy just so she would keep on singing.

The Mistress Diaries by Julianne MacLean p.1

I have always considered myself a woman of high moral fiber. How then could I have done such a thing?

Scarves and Prayers

I mentioned earlier that Mongolians use scarves in their religious beliefs. Specifically, they wrap scarves around sacred objects. In the picture to the right you can see them wrapped around a pole placed in a pile of rock. This is an ovoo.

It’s a common practice in the shamanic traditions of Mongolia to place piles of rock – sometimes with a stick or pole, but not always – in places where a deity is believed to live. For instance, there are several around Lake Khovsgol, as the lake itself is considered holy. The one in the picture to the right is one of the more prominent as it is at the top of a finger of land that goes well into the lake.

The scarves are placed here as a kind of offering. Each one is equivalent to a prayer. When The Girl saw this picture, she thought someone had made a doll. I don’t know if the shape is incidental, but I do know more than one person was involved.

The objects in the rocks are not trash. They are also offerings. Often the offerings come in the form of money, almost like a wishing well. There was a wide variety of other items, including more of the scarves, toys, an animal skull in one place, etc.

Theodor’s Plans

Theodor (talking on his cell phone): Yes, I have found the perfect specimen! She has lovely red hair, and a perfect figure. She’s a bit old, but that doesn’t really bother me. I must have her before some other scientist gets a hold of her.

Caller: Blah, blah, blah (Like the adults in Peanuts.)

Theodor: What will I do? Put a ring on it, of course.

Previously in Jack and Jill: Tina’s Big Plans

The theme for this week’s Jack and Jill is put a ring on it as suggested by Brian Miller

On His Own

Starving2

“I’m starving, Mom.”

He looks it too. No longer an ounce of fat on him. He’s supposed to be supporting himself, but she lets him use the laundry, and invites him over for dinner. He eats piles of food, but still, he’s whip-cord thin. She prays he’ll find steady work, but all he wants is to visit.

13 Things I Ate in Mongolia

There is a saying in Mongolia: “Breakfast is for yourself, lunch is for friends and family, and supper is for enemies.” The idea is that you eat the most at the beginning of the day and the least at the end. Things have changed. They still make an entire meal of breakfast, but we had some three course suppers too. Between meals we were treated to many home made foods. Here is some of what I ate:

1. yogurt
2. cheese curd
3. marmot
4. freshly made cheese
5. milk tea (actually, I skipped because I wasn’t sure I could get away with it. Now I’m thinking it probably would have been ok, I’m kicking myself for skipping)
6. fermented mare’s milk
7. beer
8. beef dumplings
9. beef slices in gravy
10. beef
11. potato salad
12. horse dumplings
13. pulled goat

Suzie’s House 322: Losing a Wad

Suzie's House

Elton wasn’t quite sure what to make of the girl. When the kids first turned up in his office he had assumed she was a hangers-on. When everyone else picked up their instruments and she just stood there, he was sure of it. But they said she was the singer. And then Bruce handed her a mask.
