13 Characters from Final Fantasy VII

It’s been quite a while since I have gotten sucked into an RPG (Roll Playing Game – video game type). The Girl unearthed an oldy but goody a couple of weeks ago and now my time is getting devoured by it.

1. Cloud – the hero. Lots of twisted backstory on this guy.

Suzie’s House 363 : The Best Dad Around

Suzie's House

His mother hadn’t abandoned him. She’d merely been murdered. Gene pulled his guitar onto his lap and strummed a few notes while he considered all the mixed up feelings he had about family and friends now that he knew the truth. Tracy would probably say something like how this would make a good song. Maybe she was right. Maybe he needed to try writing one.

She Who Remembers by Linda Lay Shuler p.33

Once more he lifted the flute to his lips. There was the melody of darkness falling softly, softly; of evening when day is done, stars appear, and families gather on rooftops to sing and tell stories and be happy.

In case you were wondering, the rooftops in question are the flat roof of an Anasazi cliff dwelling.

Odds and Ends

Seems like there’s always more to do than I can handle. I’ve got a to-do list a mile long, but most of it can wait. What can’t wait any longer is the physical therapist.

For quite a while now I’ve been limping around with a torn ligament. Silly me. I thought if I just stayed off it long enough it would mend itself. Over a year later, and I’m still limping. Turns out that my efforts have actually crippled me. But more on that next week.

Say Cheese

Tina (muttering to herself): Try and keep me out, will you? I’ll get some embarrassing pictures and blackmail you into letting me in! It shouldn’t be hard. It’s not like you belong in the kitchen in the first place. Now say cheese!

Historical Documents

“Mommy, Mommy, come quick! Daddy found a newspaper in the walls.”

“A newspaper? Oh, you mean where he’s remodeling?” Mommy followed her son to the room they were expanding. “It must be very old. The realtor said everything in the house dated back to the 1900’s, right down to the wall paper.”

When they walked into the room, they found Daddy reading the newspaper with a scowl.

“Honey, what does it say?”

“It says the Red Sox haven’t won in 81 years.”

“So?”

“It’s from 1999. And the wainscoting is plastic.”

13 Things Getting Rained On

Here in Montana we tend to get a bit dry. When I lived in Wisconsin I could go a month at a whack without having to water the lawn. Not so in Montana. But for the last week we’ve been more than making up for it. It’s been highs in the 50’s and more rain than not for days. Here are ten things getting wet right now.

1. My garden. Yay!

2. The lawn. Yay again.

3. Lumber I was going to use as soon as I got the table saw running.

4. The table saw – wrapped up in tarps.

5. The van my son lives in.

6. The chair that wouldn’t fit into the van.

7. The junk in the back of a truck that was going to go to the dump.

8. The compost heap. That’s a good thing, right?

9. The shed which leaks.

10. A couple of old bicycles.

11. The electrical line. Is that why my internet has been acting weird?

12. My mail. I really need a new mail box.

13. The newspaper. The paperboy doesn’t even try to get it all the way into our yard. He drops it by the curb.

This will be the last week that I offer a Mr. Linky link on my Thursday Thirteen post. I’ve got nothing against Mr. Linky, but I’ve decided to give up my premium account. I’ll still be doing Thursday Thirteen regularly though and hope to see you then.

Suzie’s House 362 : Fine, Just Fine

Suzie's House

As Trent drove off, everyone else on the porch went back in the house, but Drew needed a minute or two, so he sat on the porch swing and stared at his tips of his shoes. It felt like someone took his life vest just as he was about to head into the worst rapids on a rafting trip.

His vision blurred a bit. He tried to focus, and sudsy white waves appeared to wash over the top of his shoes. Great. All the stress must have triggered another melt down. Maybe if he sat here people would assume he was just lost in thought instead of completely divorced from reality.

The Last of the Serialist

With a heavy heart today I announce the end of The Serialists blog hop. We had a good, long run, but I find it is more effort than I have the energy for.

We have seen a lot of great serials here since the hop began. From Science Fiction to Horror to my own mainstream romance, we’ve had it all. I have loved every minute of it.

I will be keeping the links to your serials live through my Serialists page. All the buttons currently in my sidebar will end up there.

I want to thank everyone who participated over the years. In particular, I want to thank my most regular and consistent participants:

Ann Pino
Sheilagh
oldegg

Thank you for everything. I hope we all continue writing serials for years to come.

This is the hub for The Serialists, a meme for people who post original, serialized fiction on their blogs. If you have one or more posts you would like for us to read, please put the direct link(s) to the post(s) in the linky. Remember to visit one another and comment. We all want to hear from our readers.

Just in Time by Kathryn Shay p. 3

He’d whipped out his cell phone to call the ambulance when one of them roused.
She was the tallest, most muscular and toned. When her eyes opened, they were a
startling, pure green. She blinked, like a cat watching a human.

Time to Face the Music

I knew when I took on The Serioalists that I would be facing a difficult challenge; how to keep people actively engaged, especially when I’m such a slow reader. But I had hope that I would be able to attract enough writers to make it worth while.

Sadly, I find I am already out of energy. I simply can’t come up with the time and enthusiasm necessary to get the ball rolling again. So as much as it pains me, I’m going to have to wish my little self made blog hop goodbye.

The Best Way to Get It Done

Jill: So I got this great idea for how to promote the book I wrote. I’ll make a little movie out of the first scene.

Jack: Where will you get the actors?

Jill: I’ll do it myself. And I’ll write and play the music for it, and direct it and produce it.

Jack:
What’s the book about?

Jill: Barbra Streisand.

Previously in Jack and Jill: Grapes of Wroth

The theme for this week’s Jack and Jill is “Barbra Streisand” as suggested by Jannie Funster

Hail the New Revolution

“Sandra, I went to that dentist you recommended.” Matt dropped into the seat across from her at the Butterfly Coffee House.

He looked better, but before she could say anything he was talking again.

“That place scares me.” He held up a hand to stop her from talking. “Not because I hate dentists. Because of the windows. They had chicken wire embedded in them.”

“Yes? So?”

“I thought at first it was to keep the molotov cocktails and rocks out, but then I noticed it’s on the second floor. It’s probably to keep the patients deranged by pain from escaping.”

“Oh. I thought it was because all his windows broke out in the last hailstorm.”

13 Changes

The Girl just took a final exam in her history class that included such things as which musician used to break his guitar on stage. Yeah. History class. Feeling old much? It got me thinking about the differences between now and when I was her age.

1. Let’s get rid of the obvious first. There was no internet.

2. Computers finally got small enough that you could fit one on a desk and cheep enough for a middle class person to buy.

3. I had only set foot in 16 states, two countries, and one continent. Now I’ve been to three continents, seven countries, and all but two states. Yeah, I still have a long way to go.

4. When I was out with my friends and wanted to let my mother know I’d be late getting home, I had to locate a pay phone or beg someone to let me use theirs.

5. Lawrence Welk was in re-runs. The Girl didn’t even know who Lawrence Welk was until I told her.

6. People still referred to the British Invasion with respect to music.

7. Women were expected to pay attention to the hemlines currently fashionable for skirts.

8. There was no such thing as a bike lane, but everyone under 16 was expected to get around on a bicycle.

9. No American civilian had ever gone into a school for the specific purpose of killing as many people as possible.

10. There were four channels on TV: ABC, CBS, NBC, and PBS. Unless you got cable. Then you got the same channels, only you got them clearer.

11. Movie makers tried to avoid excess violence or nudity so they wouldn’t get too harsh of a rating.

12. Divorce was the exception, and children from families where there had been a divorce were said to be from broken families.

13. PacMan was an exciting game.

Suzie’s House 361 : Saying Goodbye to the Old Man

Suzie's House

Drew followed Trent out to the front porch with a feeling of impending doom. He had to remind himself this was no crisis. It was simply wishing Trent goodbye. He could hardly even gripe about it.

“Well. I guess this is it.” Trent straightened his back and lifted his chin.

“Yeah. I guess so.” Drew fought down the urge to say that Trent could at least have invited him to come along. They both knew that would be counter productive.
