“So what exactly were you thinking? What happened to you, man?” Vin leaned forward until he could feel the hard edge hidden inside the fluff of the overstuffed chair in Suzie’s den.
“I guess I owe you that.” Drew frowned at the floor. “I told you I couldn’t face Suzie.”
This is the story as told by our tour guide on the amphibious bus in Victoria. It is to the best of my memory with no effort to verify any of it.
Francis Rattenbury was in his early twenties when he won the contest to determine who would be the architect to build the new capitol building in Victoria. He had submitted the plans drawn by his uncle. He did not have any personal experience in construction.
He did pretty well for such a noob. See the photo at the top? Yeah, not bad. Too bad he forgot the bathrooms. That and coming in at twice the price as what was budgeted.
Tina: What is cocci? I don’t see anything.
Theodore: Of course not. Like all bacteria, they are too small to see.
Tina: Oh.

Becky’s daddy is a photographer for a big magazine. He goes all over the world to places with wars and disasters, and what her mommy calls, “the worries of the world”. When he isn’t gone, he likes to go out on the lake in an old boat he says he’s had forever. When he is gone Becky goes out to the boat in the yard and plays pirate. One day he came home in time to get a picture. It’s his favorite of all he’s ever taken.

1. We had a little time to kill before the ferry took us back to the mainland, so we decided to take a short tour.

Justin waited until Kate jammed her drum sticks into her back pocket before he quit messing with the shakeree. There was something he wanted to talk to her about. When she left the band’s practice room, he was right behind her.
Before we went, I knew that there was a chance that we would see actual goats on the roof, and guessed there would be sod. That’s about the only thing about the place I got right.
I’d visualized a single building by itself in the woods with maybe a little parking out front. I had assumed the road itself would be a sleepy country lane. I imagined the building itself as little more than a cabin, though I knew it held a restaurant. Wrong, wrong, wrong.
Goats on the Roof is a place in Vancouver Island that caters to tourists. I wouldn’t call it a tourist trap, though. More like a tourist mall.
The cornerstone is the store by that name. It’s much, much bigger than it looks at first glance. Inside is room for a grocery section, a housewares section, a place with imported goods like enormous fans and chopsticks, art supplies, paper, books, diaries, and a good sized restaurant.
Theodor: Well, I can certainly see the family resemblance.
Tina: I don’t. I mean, babies all look alike, but I can hardly believe that’s my father.
Theodor: I can run a test if you want proof, but really you look alike right down to the cocci.
Tina: What are cocci?
Theodor: Don’t ask.

Fork on the left. Knife on the right turned with the sharp edge toward the plate so no one could be accidentally cut. Then comes the spoon, then soup spoon, salad fork, desert fork.
He remembered all the details from his years of service as a butler. He set four places – as many as his humble table would hold. Once done, he stood by the window, and took in the view. Fifty years of service for a gold watch and this.
There would be no meal. Had there been anyone to ask, he would have said he wanted to keep in practice. Just in case.

The catty part of Kate noticed that Emma didn’t have any problem singing the song even without a bag over her head or mask. She even looked appropriate with her tearful eyes. It was obvious that Emma genuinely related to every word.
It always takes me a while after I’ve stopped doing something to get going again. I managed to get writing again fairly quickly, and the housewife routine has a way of swallowing you like a killer whale from the depths below, but everything else is still a little off kilter. Returning to the old routine feels a little odd.
My old blog routine seems to be talking about my most recent vacation. 🙂 I’ve got plenty more to show, so we’re heading back to Canada for the next few weeks. I’ve got a few Thursday Thirteens about things like trees and Victoria. Next Monday I thought I’d post something about Goats On The Roof.
If you get tired of all my vacation pictures, just let me know. I’ve got a fresh batch of close ups of snow I could share.
