Thirteen More Thursday Thirteeners

When the official Thursday Thirteen hub went down I freaked out, and not quietly either. I just couldn’t let it go. Apparently, I don’t have to. There are plenty of us still willing to do it. Don’t believe me? Check it out, these are all people who did Thursday Thirteen last week:

1. PDQ Nation I had a little trouble finding my way around the home page, but the list is great; funny and friendly the way I’d like to be.

2. Nina Pierce Yeah, I’m a sucker for pictures, and this one gives us a wonderful glimpse into her life.

3. jayedee Whom I overlooked last week. Sorry Jayedee

4. Adelle Laudan If you know Adelle, this is totally expected, but not if you don’t.

5. Gattina For an in depth look at the word “resolution”. Those of us who love words will get into this one.

6. Toni Happy dogs.

7. Mary Reasons to love Thursday Thirteen. How could I resist?

8. Tink Did online pet peeves

9. Country Dew Knock knock jokes – many very groan worthy

10. Shannon Who did it both this week and last week had a packing list.

11. kandyblossom Some great quotes of family members

12. Janet One of two people I saw do the same combined meme.

13. Grace Also did it both last week and the week before without my having noticed. Did a translation of business lingo.

And that was just the tip of the iceberg! We had plenty more participants last week just among those who left a comment on my TT, but this is my TT for the week, so I’ll stop here. 🙂

BTW, you can find others at both http://www.thursday-13.com/ and http://thebumblesblog.blogspot.com/. The one at bumbles blog is a new, shorter meme that welcomes Thursday Thirteeners.

Did you play this week? Leave your link in the comments!

By George! Life Must Go On, For Some

In last weeks installment of Mr. Al’s in-depth examination of George IV, long-time soul mate, Mrs. Fitzherbert threw in the towel. Do you think the prince noticed?

Several events in 1810 were soon to overshadow whatever pain the Prince might have experienced at the loss of Mrs. Fitzherbert. In May of that year, the Duke of Cumberland, “Alias, the Black Sheep” as his brother, the Duke of Kent referred to him, had involved himself in a nasty scandal.

The Duke of Cumberland, like all his brothers except for the Prince, had served overseas in a prestigious Calvary regiment. He had been severely wounded in battle, a nasty head wound that disfigured him and a wound to his left side that left him unable to use his left arm for months. He never did regain full use of it. The Duke’s reputation had been unsavory all along, a disfiguring facial wound made him downright sinister.

His disposition had not exactly been sunny even before his military service. He was described by one historian as (more…)

Mystery Leak

I have some sort of leak going. In a regular house I’d have a good idea where it was coming from and what to do about it, but in a mobile home, I’m baffled. Water coming up through the floor in weird places.

First it was the closet pictured above. I traced that to a dishwasher two rooms away. Now it’s in the hall. There is no basement for it to be coming up. It might somehow be making it’s way from the roof, but it isn’t dripping through the ceiling, it’s welling up from underneath. There are not pipes in the area. it isn’t a spill.

Any ideas what the heck is going on? I’m baffled.

Butterfly Award

Molly from The Bumbles Blog just gave me an award! I love awards, and this is a cool one.

Photobucket

This is supposed to be one of those meme type awards, and if anyone wants to link back to me I’d be grateful, but I’m just going to toss this at some blogs I like without worrying about the rules. If you want to do the meme part, you can get the rules off of The Bumbles Blog.

She picked a couple of people I would dearly have loved to pick; specifically Colleen and Mojo.

I’d have to say to top the list would be Jodi and Unhinged. Both of them make me think, especially about writing. Tamy at 3 Sides if Crazy has great recipes and something always going on. (You should see the Christmas ornaments she gave away) I love Susan Helen Gottfried’s Rock and Roll stories, Di’s photos, and all the living and writing stuff done by the ladies at Romance Roundtable. JC’s photos are so good they blow me away. Seriously, you should check them out. Frugal Grandma often touches my heart, even when she doesn’t mean to. I like it when Jill Shalvis does her short dialogue posts, and Suzanne McMinn’s homebody blog is quite impressive.

Frankly, there are a lot of fantastic blogs out there. No way I could award them all. If I missed you, don’t feel slighted. I’ll may catch you next time I get an award.

Omelets

This is going to be as much a description as a recipe. It’s just a basic method of making omelets.

butter or margarine
2 eggs
a splash of milk
some cheese
stuff 🙂

Stuff can be onions, bell pepper, tomato, ham, sausage, mushroom, or anything else you like. I highly recommend getting the stuff ready by chopping it into manageable pieces before you grab your frying pan.

crack the eggs into a bowl and mix with a fork. You need to at least break the yolk, but don’t have to go overboard here. Add about a tablespoon of milk for each egg.

A non-stick pan with rounded edges is the easiest to work with, but I’ve made omelets on a cast iron griddle before without too much difficulty. Put your pan on the burner and drop in a dollop of butter. Warm until butter starts to sizzle.

Pour the eggs and milk mixture into the pan.

Followed very quickly by the cheese. Grated cheese is easiest to work with. You can easily adjust the amount to your diet, easily control how it spreads, and put it in quickly. However, if you want to use slices instead, that will also work. Thick slices tend to take too long to melt and leave gummy clumps. In order to do this quickly enough, it’s best to have the cheese ready to go before putting the pan on the burner.

As soon as the cheese is in place, add the other stuff. By now the eggs should already be starting to firm around the edges. If you lift the edges with a spatula you’re less likely to burn, but do it carefully because it rips easily. When the eggs are reasonably firm all over, fold the mixture over.

If you want it to brown a little more, or need more time for the stuff to cook, then you can carefully turn it from one side to the other with the spatula. When you’re satisfied it’s done – I like my stuff crispy so I call it done after a minute or two – slide it onto a plate.

I keep prepped stuff in the freezer and put them straight into my omelets without a lot of problems, though moisture can sometimes be an issue. From the time I put the pan on the burner until I slide the omelet out generally takes me about ten minutes. I usually have enough ingredients to be able to make it, so will frequently do so when I am waiting for something to thaw, or caught without ingredients for other things.

If you posted a recipe today, leave your link in the comments and I’ll include you here.

Suzie’s House 99: Breaking Point II

Last week Ben found his father hanging out at Gene’s house.

Suzie's House

“What are you doing, going back to my place?”

Ben wished Gene would keep his voice down. It was bad enough he had to come along, walking too slow most of the time. When they left Gene’s place with his change of clothes half an hour before not only was Ben’s dad hanging around as if he and Gene’s dad were really friends when they weren’t, but a little ways down the street Ben had seen Mrs. D coming in her car.

Whatever was going on, Ben was sure it wasn’t going to be good for him, or for Gene, but he couldn’t say why. He just knew he had to go check it out for himself.

By George! It's a Sad Goodbye

In my last installment I mentioned that the Prince proved his sensitivity to social conventions by having Mrs Fitzherbert present while he had his new girlfriend, Lady Hertford, over for dinner. My regular readers will not be surprised to learn that Mrs Fitzherbert found this intolerable.

After the business with Lady Jersey, she had no desire to go through that again. With the greatest reluctance, she asked the Prince to keep his distance. Mrs. Fitzherbert’s attachment to the Prince would have been touching if it weren’t so grossly misplaced. One might think that the Prince would be overjoyed to have the decks cleared, so to speak, for his romance with Lady Hertford. Nope. Not the case at all.

The Prince wrote to a friend of Mrs. Fitzherbert’s a Miss Pigot, that

The Kids Made Me Do It

They made me play in the snow with them. They threatened to bring it into the house if I didn’t go out and slide down their hill. They had a snowball fight going by the time I got out there. It was scary.

When was the last time someone forced you to play in the snow? Did you like it? Do you miss it?

Personally, I recommend it – for a minute or two anyway.

I15

I was goofing around with my camera a couple of days ago, trying to capture the feel of being surrounded by mountains for mile after mile. What do you think? Did I do it?

These were all taken on I15 either in Idaho or Montana. I took them while driving 65 to 75 mph.

Corn Bread

We eat a lot of this. I never bother with a mix for it, unless it’s one I prepped myself.

1 c flour
1 c cornmeal
1/4 c sugar
4 tsp baking powder
1 scant tsp salt
2 eggs
1 c milk
1/4 c veg. oil

Combine dry ingredients. Add eggs, milk and oil. Mix until smooth. Pour into 9x9x2 inch pan. Bake at 425 for 20 to 25 min.

Check it out, a new meme:

Suzie’s House 98: One Handshake Away

Last time Ben was horrified to have Mrs. D return to class. He didn’t know she was, and still is on probation. Gene’s father leaves much to be desired, as does Ben’s.

Suzie's House

Ben followed Gene back to Gene’s place. If he’d been thinking, he’d have had Gene meet him at home – at Mom’s house. It was on account of Mrs. D. that he didn’t think about it.

She was all weird now. She smiled in that way that gave him the creeps all the time. She kept saying stuff that was supposed to be nice, but wasn’t, like today when she said he was a good boy because it was obvious he was trying his best. He WASN’T trying his best. He wasn’t trying to do anything in her class at all. With only a few days until the end of school, why bother? Besides, who went around saying, “good boy,” anymore? Like he was a dog or something.

So he shouldn’t have gone to Gene’s place at all, but it wasn’t the usual BS that got him. It was the shock of seeing Dad sitting there like it was something he did all the time.

“There you are,” Dad said with a smile that could rival Mrs. D’s.

“Why are you here?” Ben kept a good long distance from Dad’s side of the room.

“Something wrong with my visiting a friend?” Dad gestured toward Gene’s dad, who sat in another chair on that side of the room.

The thought of Dad and Gene’s dad getting along real well put a shiver up Ben’s spine. If friends started acting like each other, then this was going to be real bad for both him and Gene. Would Dad start beating him? Would Gene’s dad start fooling around with all kinds of women? Oh, wait. He was already doing that.

“Since when have you and Mr. Thomas been friends?” Ben took a careful step further into the room.

“I’ll get my stuff,” Gene said quietly before slipping out of the room. Ben barely acknowledged him with a nod. He totally understood his friend’s desire to get what they came for and get away.

Dad and Mr. Thomas weren’t saying much. They looked at each other like they had a problem with him and weren’t sure what to do about it.

“How come I’ve never seen the two of you together before? How long have you known each other? Why didn’t you say something?” Ben took another cautious step toward them.

“Enough with the twenty questions,” Dad bellowed.

Ben flinched. It was typical Dad, but that didn’t mean Ben felt safe.

“I’m sure he’ll find out anyway,” Mr. Thomas said. He was sober today. That was good. “Mrs. D introduced us last week. It seems we have something in common.”

“Something in common?” Ben couldn’t imagine what.

“We both have sons who are not doing well in her class.”

Good Bye Thursday Thirteen

You may or may not have noticed, but the Thursday Thirteen hub is no more.

Seriously, that sucker is completely gone.  Less than a full week after their announcement, they dropped hosting and now have a redirect to GoDaddy.  Here is my 13-part reaction.

1.  Wow!  That was so sudden.  It takes my breath away.

2.  It was so fun.  It was the highlight of my week.

3.  I’m addicted to blog stats.  Thursday was great because my stats always hit their weekly high then. It also gave me a sense of control, though the amount of time I put into it did not directly connect with the results. Still, there was a lose relationship that felt better than those random times when people would lurk, appearing from no where and going away as fast as they came.

4. I got the most comments on Thursday, easily four times as many as all the rest of the week.

5. It was so fun and easy. I could make up a list of anything. I did things like poems made of a total of 13 words, a set of 13 true-life stories, 13 photos I got through email, 13 links to web sites I like, to do lists, items on my desk, even this thing. I had several lists worked up and ready to go, and several in progress. I really got into it.

6. I got a kick out of checking out other people’s lists. It gave me a chance to get to know people and how they do their blogs. There were people of all sorts, not just us literary types; mommy bloggers, religious bloggers, reader bloggers, and totally random bloggers. It lead to a few friendships I might not otherwise have made.

7. It was the freedom I loved most. I didn’t have to fit anyone else’s theme or requirements, so long as there were 13 of them, I was fine.

8. I keep thinking “what do I do now?”

9. Will you all keep doing Thursday Thirteen if there is no hub? I will if you will.

10. Do you think they might sell it? GoDady is a seller of domain names. Maybe the folks at the hub are going to sell it? If so, I hope they do it soon so they don’t loose too many people.

11. My heart goes out to them about the granddaughter with leukemia that precipitated the closing down of the hub. That’s a hard road no matter how you look at it.

12. I’ve been looking around for alternatives. I wouldn’t mind doing something a little shorter. Sometimes coming up with 13 items is hard for me. I’ve thought about turning my Talk To Me Tuesdays into a meme, but WordPress’s free blogging won’t let me do auto linkies. I have to do them all manually. Then again, nothing says I have to stay with WordPress.

13. Does anyone know of another meme with a hub that lets you do whatever you want the way Thursday Thirteen did? If so, please let me know.
