13 Video Games

Taken at random from my shelf.

Some of these I wonder why we still have, some I wish had never made their way into the house, and some I play.

Ah Maria, From the Brink of Ruin

In the first few month of Queen Maria Theresa of Austria’s reign, she faced invasion, world war, and noble Hungarians. She cut a deal with king Frederick of Prussia that would have allowed her to defeat her enemies, if not for her husband’s military incompetence. How does Frederick respond?

If Maria had few illusions as to what a tricky “friend” Frederick could be, his behavior after their deal, the Klineschnellendorf Convention (Yes, I had to spell check that BY HAND!) certainly confirmed it. As we have seen, Maria’s husband was very tardy in following up the advantage that Frederick had handed the Austrians by suddenly withdrawing from the war. Frederick’s withdrawal left the Bavarian army and their French allies badly exposed while they attacked Prague.

It had been Frederick’s hope that the Austrian army would cut his “allies” down to size, and exhaust themselves doing so, thereby leaving Prussia free to move however Frederick saw fit. In Frederick’s view, weak neighbors were always a good thing, especially if one of them was France.

Teaser Tuesday: Too Good to be True by Kristan Higgins

Too Good to be True by Kristan Higgins p259

At the sound of another groan, I tried to go to my happy place… a meadow full of wildflowers, guns firing, cannons booming, Confederate and Yankee soldiers dropping like flies… but no.

“Oh baby,” my mother crooned.

The narrator is a Civil War reenactment enthusiast hiding in a closet while her parents make out in the connected room.

MizB of Should Be Reading hosts Teaser Tuesday. Grab your current read, open to a random page, share a couple of “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page. Go see Should Be Reading for more detail.

Numnumnum

Jill: Honey, reading the daily newspaper?

Jack: Um…. Yeahhhh.

Jill: Let me see what’s so interesting. *reach*

Jack: Um….. Please don’t hit me.

Jill: Snacks? You’ve been hiding snacks? Look at the way Gin and Tonic are gobbling them up. Have you been doing this every day this whole time we’ve been dieting?

Jack: Well. Yeah. Maybe.

Jill: Well, then I guess I don’t need to hide these anymore.

Suzie’s House 153: Good Bye, Drew

Suzie's House

“Mom! You’re home! Where’s Drew?” Ben leaned to the left and then to the right, trying to see around the hug fest between Mom and Diane and Miranda.

Seemed like one minute the house was empty, the next everyone came home at once. Except Ben couldn’t see Drew.

He tried slipping around everybody in the hall to look out the front door, even though Drew wasn’t the type to hang out on the porch, and besides, Vin was inside, so who would Drew hang out with?

Between the Right and the Left

So many of you asked me to continue where I left off a couple of weeks ago with Lover’s Lane that I felt obliged.

The deal would be going down in fifteen minutes. If Drew wasn’t there before the snitch, his cover would be blown. Half way between a car rocking with noisy lovers and a car with a hand on the glass, a quiet moan that could be love or death, he stopped. The Lover’s Lane stalker? Or the throws of passion? He reached for the handle.

I know, I know. Bad place to stop. Well, I tried.
