He groaned, rolled over, punched the pillow. Shouldn’t have yelled at the boss. Should tell his wife, no more paycheck. Unable to sleep, he sat up.
“Everything all right?” His wife reached out in the dark.
Couldn’t let her down. Have to get a new job in the morning.
“Yeah,” he lied. “Everything’s fine.”
Think you can write a story in 55 words? Go visit the G-man to see those who did.
I went to dig up an old post for reference and noticed that I managed to write a few entertaining lists of 13 over the years. Here are 13 of my favorite.
1. 13 Reactions
This is the one that announced the publication of Moving In. Mostly it just says “squeee.”
2. 13 More Pictures of Africa
These are great pictures of Cape Town, Victoria Falls, etc.
3. A 13 Part Tour of the ShapeShifter World
I stole from Susan Helen Gottfried.
4. 13 Manga
I actually like more than 13 graphic novel series, but these are some of the best.
5. 13 Telephone Poles
Pictures of telephone poles. I was in a mood.
6. Thirteen Silly Recipes.
Since I started blogging I have posted hundreds of recipes. Of course some will be silly.
7. 13 Boxes of Cereal
Just had to prove I really do keep a lot of cereal in the house.
8. Thursday Thirteen 55: Things That Can Keep Me From Reciprocating Your Comments.
This is the one I was trying to look up that caused me to come up with this list.
9. T-13: Thirteen Identical Slices of Cheese
My kid’s made me do it.
10. Sounds from around the house
Ever tried to blame the pets for the funny sounds only to find there are no pets?
11. Things My Kids Have Said To Me
People seemed to like this one.
12. Pros and Cons of Bifocals I’m still not entirely happy with these glasses.
13. Gone With the Wind in 13 Words
Just what it says. The entirety of Gone With the Wind reduced to 13 words.
In order to save Austria, Queen Maria Theressa had to humble herself to the Hungarian. She gladly thumbed her nose at her own nobles. Then peace came.
Peace. For the first eight years of her reign all had been war. Things had not gone particularly well in that department. Overall though, things hadn’t gone particularly badly either. Only a small bit of Silesia remained in Austria’s hands. As bitter a pill as this was to swallow, she had the consolation of knowing that she had beaten the French, Bavarians and Saxons. She had kept the mighty Frederick of Prussia out of Vienna.
Indeed, while Frederick was being lauded as “The Great”, he himself knew how close he had come to suffering a very nasty set-back at the hands of the Austrians. In his view Maria was no fool. She had already replaced her husband as head of the army. It was only a matter of time before she got truly competent men to lead her armies. And then what? Nothing good for Prussia, Frederick was sure of that.

With all the grand pictures of mountains I’ve posted in the last year, you probably have the wrong idea of what it’s like to live in them. Most of the time I’m in a town or city, and don’t really notice the mountains. For the next few days I’ll post some street shots. You’ll always be able to see mountains in the pictures, but like this one, they may be hard to spot.
I was planning on posting the awards I’ve received lately today, but literally fell asleep on my keyboard while trying to set it up. Still not done. Will post it next Monday instead.
Meanwhile, check these out.
I’ll bet those of you who looked at yesterday’s 365 picture didn’t notice the train. Yep, there’s a train on the bottom left of the picture. Can’t see it? Neither could I. So I played around in Photoshop to see if I could make it show. I did, in a ghostly sort of way, but I did better at making the couch show.
Jack: It was a good fishing day. The river is high, and full of fish.
Jill: Probably freshly stocked by the fishery.
Jack: Are you complaining?
Jill: Me? No, no! Hand them over and I’ll fry them up.
Jill: Funny. I could swear there was more than one when he gave it to me.
Today’s theme is Three

Drew stared out the window of the local FBI headquarters. Local for New Mexico, that is. The skies in Albuquerque were a darker blue than those in Wisconsin, and the heat waves something he wouldn’t expect there. Not to mention all the earth tone buildings – sandy beige, rust, and gunpowder blue done in stucco or adobe, the wilting cactus and white chip gravel in place of Wisconsin’s emerald green lawns, the lilt of Spanish and dusky skin everywhere he looked… he couldn’t have face more culture shock had he sought it
Paper man
Made by a child
Found on the floor
Wadded up
Thrown away
When no one is looking
Unfolds himself
Runs across carpet
To a neglected door
Slipping through
When the child
Works her magic
Wiggles a finger
Calls him back
To play
Slave
