A Random 13

1. Christmas came way too fast this year. Noramally I wait until the last second, then get all my shopping done in a whirlwind. This time I tried to get it all done ahead of time, and now I’m still dealing with wrapping, and I’ve lost a gift. It’s around here somewhere.

2. I’m suffering sleep deprivation. Have been ever since the eclipse.

3. Anyone else stay up to watch the eclipse?

4. Longest eclipse I’ve ever seen. I’m used to the slow march of the earth’s shadow across the face of the moon, followed by about five, maybe ten minutes of that weird orangey color, then the continuation of the march. I’ve never seen it stall out in the middle before. I swear, it was dark for at least half an hour.

5. I’m buried under snow yet again. I’m used to plenty of snow that hangs around a week or two, then melts off leaving brown grass and bare trees only to be re-flocked a few weeks later until finally spring turns what falls into rain. This year I might as well be living in Wisconsin. Sheesh.

6. It’s been seriously cold. So cold, I spilled some water on the back porch the other day, and it turned to ice faster than I could get it mopped up. It’s an enclosed, carpeted porch. The carpet looks real weird with brushed ice all over.

7. I feel like I’m behind in everything.

8. I’m skipping Suzie’s House tomorrow. Sorry. I’ll pick it up again next week.

9. I feel like I’m falling out of the year butt-first, like a breach birth. I’m so not ready for New Years.

10. Anyone doing resolutions?

11. I like to have a set of resolutions, or what I call goals. Sometimes I even do it for New Years. More often not. I’m thinking I might start up another 104 Challenge, only this time make it something like 12. Does twelve submissions sound like too few for the course of a year?

12. Wow, is it really this close to Christmas? I need to pack!

13. It’s been a day of miscommunication for me. If I say something stupid, please forgive me.

Trevor’s Song by Susan Helene Gottfried p. 147

… all he could really do was chew on his frustration silently and try to hide how he felt. Like usual. After all, nothing bothered Trevor Wolff.

Except, of course, for the things that did.

For Lack of Funding

He played badly. Every other note sounded wrong. His fingers stumbled. He gave up, walked away.

“Stupid piano.”

It wasn’t like it mattered as they took the piano away.

Male Man

Jack: I said I’d help you take the packages to the post office, but why do I have to carry so many of them?

Jill: Do you really need to ask?

Jack: Yeah, I think I do.

Jill:
It’s because you’re so big, and strong, and handsome… you’re the mail type man.

Suzie’s House 193: The Lips of an Angel

Suzie's House

Gene couldn’t get rid of the grin on his face. He went down the pull-down attic steps into the upstairs hall with a choke hold on the guitar. Maybe he didn’t get to keep it forever, but right now it was all his.

“This is great, Mrs. H.! Thanks!”

“You’re welcome. Just keep up with your chores and you’ll be able to trade it in for an electric bass in a couple of months.” She smiled like she was proud or something.

The Belle of the Ball

She was the belle of the ball, sought by many, loved even revered.
Her sweet voice rang out clear and strong.
Her beautiful curves shone to perfection.
They hung her in the chapel
where they could hear her every time
someone pulled her rope.
And pull they did, every Sunday, Easter, and twice on Christmas Eve.

The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words. Flash Fiction 55 is hosted by the G-man, a host with the most.

13 Christmas Tunes

A couple of weeks ago Jennifer Leeland did a list of thirteen Christmas songs, which included the first in my list. I liked it so much, I had to make a list and share it again. 🙂

Christmas Can-Can. Need I say more?

How’s Your Weather?

Mine is wonky, but in a way that comforts me, now. We had several days like this where the snow piled up in the roads and went no where, just made the wheels spin. It wasn’t so much that we got slammed like the East Coast people and their “monster storms”. It’s that it got really cold and stayed that way a long time. So we ended up with the river nearly freezing over.

Kind of pretty, eh? I’ve got more pictures like this on my Welcome page.

Then it got warm and everything thawed. This is what comforts me. Temperatures that fluctuate wildly – that’s just Montana. Temperatures that plummet to the teens and stay there day after day for who knows how long? That’s a little too close to “ice age” for comfort.

Trevor’s Song by Susan Helene Gottfried p. 67

It figured. Two women. An awesome new bass from that luthier he’d met in Phoenix.
An amazing, powerful new album, tour on the way, fans to win over — and something to f6ck it all up.

This one’s by a friend of mine. It’s a rock and roll story with a real solid feel for the industry and the characters. I liked Trevor before simply from reading Susan’s outtakes on her blog, but after reading this book I really love him. Thumbs up on this one.

Suzie’s House 192: Computers and Guitars

Suzie's House

“Mom, I need a computer.” Ben said as he walked into the kitchen, like it was no big deal.

If Gene had said something like that to his old man, he’d have gotten popped one. Really, what a stupid thing to say.

Ben barely even noticed Gene, who still sat here at the table, pretending to drink a mug of cocoa, like he wanted something hot to drink in the middle of summer. Except Summer Vacation was going to end in a few more days.
