Featured author: Old Egg who does a wonderfully tender serial about a Polynesian (Hawaiian?) couple.
“So… what are you going to do?” Suzie sprinkled herbs on the roast, then glanced over her shoulder to where Gene sat at the kitchen table.
“About the test Friday?” Gene wouldn’t look her in the eye. He hunched over a plate of cut vegetables and dip. The fact he actually put a carrot stick in his mouth spoke volumes about how strong his feelings were. If he hadn’t wanted to talk about the real issue, he would have politely excused himself as soon as she set the plate in front of him.
Of all the islands, this one is one of the best at showing the volcanic nature of the archipelago, and the way the islands, once formed, become habitable. Fernandina is right over the hot spot. You can kind of see the volcano in the background here.
“We have to do it. We crossed Zero Latitude, so we have to celebrate, right?”
“Yes, but… like this? It’s three decks down!”
“Just close your eyes and do it. I’ll be right behind you.”

Jack: Ah, come on, Darling. Just one.
Jill: No! I know you. One will lead to another, and then another. This just isn’t the time.
Jack: You just don’t want me putting any more hair on my chest.
Jill: (…)

“Hey, get a load of that boat.” She pointed over the ship’s railing to the boat floating next to us.
“What boat?” The one in front or one of the one’s behind?
“The one with all the kayaks attached to the back. Doesn’t it look like a duck?”
“Um… no?”
“Sure it does. A mama duck with all the ducklings swimming behind it.”
The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words. Flash Fiction 55 is hosted by the G-man, a host with the most.
Yep, more vacation shots.
We left Baltra and went to Dragon Hill, which is on Santa Cruz, then headed North East to Rabida, then made a quick stop at Santiago before spending a loooong night traveling around to the far side of Isabela. Here is some of what we saw.
1. Dragon Hill, so named for it’s resemblance to iguana. I don’t see it, but that’s what the guide said.
“What is this?” Gene didn’t mean to sneer, but he could kind of feel his lip do that thing Tracy hated. But so what? She was doing stuff she shouldn’t, too.
“I’m just trying to help.”
“That’s what you always say.” Gene groaned and kind of leaned into his hands with his elbows right in the middle of Mrs. H’s desk, right there in front of the computer screen.
Baltra is a dry island with lots of grass and Holy trees. And frigate birds. This time of year is a prime nesting season for the frigates, so we saw a fair amount of mating behavior. For instance, the males will inflate a red sack in their neck and chest area when they see a desirable mate. They may do this when they are in the air or not.
At one point a female – obvious from their white bibs – few over, setting off every male in the area. I still have no idea what makes a female frigate so sexy, but apparently this one had it going on.
So many buildings looked broken – iron re-bar sticking from the roofs. I thought “hurricane.” But no. The guides say no such thing hits the Galapagos. Expansion, maybe?

Jill: It’s so nice that we can all be here together.
Jack: Yes. All of us. You, me, Gin, Tonic, George, Cara, Mia, Renee, about a hundred iguanas….
