Flooding

The river is running high again this year. It looked pretty much the same last year, but the news was full of stories about flooding in town. This year, not a peep. I’m not sure if that means we didn’t get any flooding, or if it wasn’t enough to be worth talking about.

It’s been cold too. Saying there is still snow on some of the mountains isn’t going to impress anyone who lives in the mountains, but usually by this time of the year it’s all gone. Will it impress anyone if I point out that my furnace is still running?

Personally, I like to sweat in the summer. When it’s so cold out that paint won’t dry, I’ve got a problem. I’d give up hope for it, but as soon as I do, I’ll probably swelter.

How’s your weather? Normal?

Theresa’s In Love

Strange man, chestnut hair and twinkling eyes,
smiled at her.
A year ago, she would have
pretended not to notice.
A month ago, she would have
smiled, blushed, looked away,
too uncomfortable in her own skin
to be noticed.
Today she said hello.

An explosion of possibility unfolded in her mind.
Morning at the kitchen table, handing him a cup of coffee
while birds sang and she tugged at her bathrobe.
Evenings at the movies, or an Italian restaurant or
ballroom dancing in high heels and a fluttery gown.
Rocking chairs on the porch moving in synchronicity.
All the things long denied finally within reach.

She would not stare at him, passing in dignity, but she smiled.
“Wow, what a hottie.” His friend said.
“Yeah. Wait here. I’m going to get her number.”

Suzie’s House 264 : The Devil Is in the Details

Suzie's House

Ben stopped to ditch his bulky jacket when his mom and Gene went off to the kitchen. There wasn’t much room on the coat rack, so he slung it over the suitcase that Drew had mailed to them.

Something was bothering Ban. His thoughts were a little too misty to be sure, but it might have something to do with the way Gene figured out all about how the suitcase got there without being told, but Ben couldn’t. He’d been working so hard to see things lately, but it didn’t seem to be working.

The Serialists of June 6th

Ann Pino is one of my favorite serialists. I’ve been reading two of hers at the same time: Points of Departure and Diana’s Diary. These are only two of the series she has made freely available to the public. Have you been by lately?

This is the hub for The Serialists, a meme for people who post original, serialized fiction on their blogs. If you have one or more posts you would like for us to read, please put a direct link to the post(s) in the linky.

If you are not an author and would only like to read, then please leave a comment. I may feature you next week.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett p. 334

This is from the point of view of a maid.

In the kitchen, I fix some grits without no seasoning, and put them baby marshmallows on top. I toast the whole thing to make it a little crunchy. Then I garnish it with a cut-up strawberry. That’s all a grit is, a vehicle. For whatever it is you rather be eating.

I’ve been making good progress on this one and enjoying it very much.

Death to Dirty Dishes

I was pulling the dishes out of the sink and stacking them on the table in preparation for washing when this happened. Apparently the knife was in there all along, but slipped out when I moved them. No, I didn’t get hurt. Normally I’d have just pulled it out and washed them all, but I thought I’d share.

The Belonging Set: Theresa’s Chronicle I

Too noble for the pitch and yaw of friendship, Theresa
sailed the halls of high school alone.
Waves of dewy friendship crashing all around her,
she arrives at graduation high and dry.
Sentimental speeches and crying friends clinging to one another
leave her unmoved,
but the simple crossing of the stage brings home the sure knowledge
that passing through life alone is too hard.
Too late for this stage of life, she has learned what will redeem her.
She must change.

Suzie’s House 263 : How Do You Vindicate It?

Suzie's House

“Hey! Who put this here?” Ben gave the suitcase a kick for having tripped him.

“Huh. A suitcase?” Gene squatted down next to it. There was something kind of familiar about this suitcase. It was black canvas, with wheels; the kind you put in the over head compartment of a plane. A little silver thing on the handle jingled when he moved it. There was even an airline tag attached. But the tag said Denver, not Madison.

“Mooooom! Where’d this suitcase come from?”

The Help by Kathryn Stockett p.111

“I did not raise you to use the colored bathroom!” I hear her hiss-whispering, thinking I can’t hear, and I think, Lady, you didn’t raise your child at all.
