“Humph., You think this is stylish? You know they make this stuff in sweatshops in India or China right?” The girl said to her friend. “Besides, it’s ugly on you.” “I guess you’re right.” She put it back. “Great! ‘Cause it’s perfect on me!” Her friend grabbed it and ran straight to the check out counter. “You have been so helpful, Gene.” Suzie handed him the channel locks. She’d always found the channel lock wrench much more helpful than a regular plumber’s wrench, but she’d given Gene the choice. That his preferences ran along the same lines as hers pleased her. “I’m pretty sure this last job will put you over the line.”
They were too kind a people to kill their criminals, no matter how heinous or frequent the crime. Instead, they reached into his brain, and changed the bad man to good, molding and reforming him until he would not recognize himself. One day he looked in the mirror with razor in hand, face already lathered, and sliced a jugular instead. Better dead than read. “Hey, Babe.” Vin settled on the lawn chair next to Miranda. With a beer in one hand, and the grill’s special, long-handled spatula in the other. He stared cross the backyard at the same row of trees and hulking Victorian house’s backside that Miranda had been staring at. “Pretty, isn’t it?” He waited for a few minutes to see what she said. Miranda wasn’t really the kind to wax rhapsodic over the turning of Autumn leaves. She probably hadn’t noticed […]
The back yard was full of glass. Every summer she walked around barefoot, letting the calluses thicken, baking herself brown in the long, hot days, and plucking bottles shaped by the minds of the 1930’s – bits of glass in blue and green and brown – and thinking of snake oil and salesmen. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words. Flash Fiction 55 is hosted by the G-man, a host […]
“Mom!” Ben just about flipped out when he saw what she was doing. “How’d you get that?” “What? This flashdrive? It was sitting on my desk.” “But… but…” Ben swallowed hard, trying to think and not doing a good job of it.

She was doing it. She was really doing it. Lisa typed away on her laptop, watching the words fill the screen. Well, maybe fill was too strong a word. They appeared. She had no idea where they came from. They were simply there when she reached for them. It had taken her the better part of an hour, but she’d managed to come up with enough of the phantom sentences to cover one page.
“Wow, look at that. All that rock.” Boss man shook his head with a grin of admiration. “Yeah. Nice view,” employee said, looking at the mountains. Not that they needed anything pretty for what they had in mind. It’s not like the factory would have any windows. “Yep. Just about perfect.” Boss man stooped to scoop up some pebbles. Oh. He hadn’t looked up this whole time. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story […]
“Humph!” The idiot. How hard could it be to sit down and write a story? Lisa stomped her way down the hall, feeling awkward for being in Ben’s house after saying something she knew would make him mad, as if the house itself were telling her she didn’t belong here. “Hey, Lisa.” Tracy came out of Gene’s room. She had a rosy look to her cheeks, and Lisa suspected she and Gene had been kissing. Gene came to the doorway, […]
Yep, random, unrelated picture again. I’m glad you guys let me get away with this. “Now where has it gone?” Passport, driver’s license, lipstick, coins… she digs through her purse, bringing out too much information with the bottle of medicine, the movie ticket stub, and the used tissues. “No, no, don’t go anywhere. I’m sure it’s here.” At last, iPod found, she calls them up. Baby pictures. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story […]
The wind chatters at the windowsill thunders through the trellis moans around the corners and roars over the roof. I cower under the covers while the house shakes, and the wind laughs. Monkey Man hosts the 160 Character Challenge. See what you can write in 160 characters or less, spaces included.
Lisa laughed harder than Ben thought she should, but he couldn’t say anything because he meant for her to laugh when he told her about fighting Gene over who got to do the dishes, so… yeah.
She held the shell to her ear and thought about all the time’s she’d done it while he was gone. “This make me think of you.” He smiled, eating the last bite of yogurt. “Did you know it also works with an empty yogurt cup?” He held it up to her ear. “It sounds the same!” “Works better than my cell phone.” The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words.
