“O.M.G. What is this?” Katy stared at the line in open disbelief. Kate bit her lower lip, and tried not to feel uneasy. Could she really do this? Would she really get a chance to audition for Tracy and Gene’s band? So many people had shown up. Probably they were all drawn by the same things she was; the chance to be in the limelight, the chance to talk to people like Tracy and Gene who were both so cool, […]
I don’t always want for you to jump into the breach just because I pointed it out. Sometimes, I want to think out loud. Maybe, together, we can find a bridge or some other way around. But always, you must take action. My love, please reconsider. Before you risk your life for me, lets talk. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words. “Wow! Look at all them.” Tracy could hardly stand still. So many people had come, and she’d only let a few people know about it that morning. This school really was full of gossips. “I guess you were right.” Gene scratched the back of his head, looking all ripped and yummy. “Well, of course.” She grinned. He had no idea that all these people were here because of him. He probably thought she’d bribed them somehow.
I always thought my air was re-breathed in the Amazon. Not so, I’ve heard. It’s Russia with the pristine forests lending their oxygen to my lungs. Even as I watch the forest fires decimate my woods, I have to wonder why my air isn’t Made in America. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words. “Have you heard the rumors? Gene and Tracy are looking for band mates. Can you imagine? I want to do it! I want to be in their band.” Kate looked around at all her friends – Katy, Emma, and Alishia, waiting for their eyes to go big. Kate had been sitting on that piece of information for a whole period, and now that they were out in the hall she couldn’t wait to get their reaction. “Me too!” All three […]
The time to go is early, or late. By noon the pools are full and the seating dear and all the margaritas are melting like wayward snowmen. Early, all the vacationers are nursing hangovers and late they are partying in town. Go at either time and the only people in the way of leisure are cabana boys. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words. Flash Fiction 55 is hosted by […]
“We could do it.” Tracy’s eyes shone all bright like they do when she gets one of those ideas, the kind that get everyone in trouble. “Seriously. We should do it.” Gene sat on the bed with his guitar across his lap. He’d rather have had Tracy across his lap, but that always made Ben and Lisa uncomfortable. Instead, Tracy bounced next to him, making his fingers slip off the frets. If he’d been serious about playing, he’d have made […]
“He’s back! He’s Back! He’sBack! He’sbackhe’sbackhe’sback!” Puppy ran as fast as he could to G-man. “Were you worried because I was gone so long? I just had to kick some azz.” G-man popped the top of his favorite brew and settled down – gently – for a round of puns. Puppy crawled under his chair and covered his ears. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words. Flash Fiction 55 is […]
There were worms crawling on the ceiling. They differed from the ones Drew could feel crawling under his shoulder in ways too easily explained by scientific things like distance for him to easily dismiss. Drew lifted his hand for comparison. The fingers looked like worms.
Sonoma picked through her collection of botanicals, looking for a combination she thought might help settle the man she and her husband had taken in for the night. She had everything from yarrow to Echinacea in her suitcase. She glanced at the guy, sizing him up for muscle mass and mental stability. Drew had a couple of day’s growth of beard – just enough so it clearly wasn’t intentional – and clean hair about shoulder length with gray around the […]
Drew stood in front of a narrow window in the foyer of the inn in Yellowstone and stared at the darkness. No taxi would come for him. No busses ran now. And he did not have a place to stay. In the early evening moonlight the deep piles of snow gleamed eerily, taunting him with his own stupidity.
Suzie stood in her bedroom with the letter in her hand. “Suzie” was written in Drew’s bold script over the top. Clearly he’d expected her to open his suitcase and find it sitting there on top of his belongings. Did he really think she wouldn’t respect his privacy? Did he not know her at all?
He loves her. Each morning glistens like morning dew on the rose petals as she stumbles into the kitchen where coffee splashing into the cup warms his smile. She sets the toast to slow-burn and stops for a kiss that is never as quick as intended nor as long as either would like. When she heads out the door, his scent lingers giving her a Mona Lisa smile all day.
The instant Tracy lay eyes on the suitcase, she was completely taken with it. How weird! A suitcase sitting right by the door. Judging by the dent it made in her shin it must be full. Was someone leaving? “Whose suitcase is this, Mrs. H. ?” “Ah. That.” Mrs. H. finished closing the door behind Tracy, and looked at the suitcase like it might bite her. “That belongs to a former tenant.”
Ben stopped to ditch his bulky jacket when his mom and Gene went off to the kitchen. There wasn’t much room on the coat rack, so he slung it over the suitcase that Drew had mailed to them. Something was bothering Ban. His thoughts were a little too misty to be sure, but it might have something to do with the way Gene figured out all about how the suitcase got there without being told, but Ben couldn’t. He’d been […]
