160 – Simple Things

No longer able to speak clearly, she doesn’t say anything, but I know what she’s thinking as the nurse takes her tray away. She’s thinking, “Thank you.” Monkey Man hosts the 160 Character Challenge. See what you can write in 160 characters or less, spaces included.

FF55 Dealers

Totally random picture: The neighbors are dealing. One night, coming home from work, my husband banged on the trunk and shined a flashlight in the car of a “customer”. “Do you know you’re parked in the wrong spot?” Furious jumping and furtive stashing proceeded the denial. “It’s a free country, isn’t it? We’ll only be a minute.” And still they don’t think they’ll get caught. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly […]

The Ghost

We thought the old house at the end of the block, the one with the gables and dead hedge, was haunted, and that’s why everyone said not to go there. The floors weren’t rotten or anything. So of course we went there all the time, until we were caught. The look in Dad’s eye wasn’t fear. It was guilt. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words. Flash Fiction 55 is […]

The Still Point.

The Girl: Even if you aren’t time traveling backwards, you’re still moving through time. Alice: And Space. Just lay there, the world moves. The Boy: Unless you go up in a rocket ship. Alice: Still moving with respect to the universe. The Boy: Unless you find the one spot in the whole universe that isn’t. Think about that. *eye wiggle* The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words.

Squeeee

Recess! She couldn’t wait! First out the door, running fast across the playground right into the biggest school bully. Down he went. “Hey! You! You did that on purpose. I’m going to beat you up.” “Tee-hee. No you’re not!” Running again, she looked over her shoulder as if to say “hurry up slow poke!” He grinned, and let her go. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words.

Before You Go

Stop. Tell me why you’re leaving. You owe me nothing, still I ask, I beg; Was it the wall too high? the rope? the ladder? Which act failed? Which should I cut? Which joke fell flat? Tell me, before you walk away, leaving me nary a dime Have I no talent as a mime? . . . . The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words.

Italian and Spanish

Natasia, our resident glob trotter who knows several languages, got to talking about English, Spanish, French, and Italian today.  She said this:  “When I go to Italy I speak Spanish with an Italian accent and they understand me, even compliment me on my Italian. LOL. It’s just singing Spanish.” The phrase “singing Spanish” struck me as profound.  She still doesn’t see it, but maybe you do.  😀 Alice

FanLit Forever Turns One

That’s right.  The FanLit Forever board opened it’s doors on November 1st 2006.  We all came out of the Avon FanLit contest, what many refer to as “the FanLit experience.”  That contest was unlike any other.  There was so much excitement and so many seriously cool people.  Everything happened so fast.  There was scandal and intrigue and a lot of good, honest, decent people doing their best.  Many of the contestants discovered their latent interest in writing in the process. […]

Workshops on FanLit Forever

A while back I asked if anyone would be interested in having me run a workshop in The Workshop board on FanLit Forever.  The response was a resounding “Yeah, sure.” Despite the fact I am a rank amateur who has never run a workshop in her life, I’ve decided to go for it.  Maybe, with luck, we can talk a published author into coming in and doing it right. Actually, I’m going to run two at the same time.  I’m […]

Challenge 4 on FanLit Forever

Have any of you read the submissions for this round on FanLit Forever?  Oh my!  *fanning self and blushing*  It seems working from a photo this round was highly inspirational.  I can’t wait to do it again.  Actually, I didn’t.  I’ve already started on my Round 2 Challenge 4 entry even though it isn’t due for a couple of months.  It was just too fun to resist.
