I’m not a photographer to begin with. Add to that a handicap from the time delay involved in using a digital camera and a tendency for my snorkel to fill with salt water and you can pretty well bet the best pictures got away from me. Worse, I felt compelled to refrain from taking pictures of people I didn’t know, which means I can’t show you the streets of Belize City as they really ought to be seen – full […]
I’m going to cheat today, and send you all off to some recipes elsewhere in the Internet that look about right for the sort of food I was eating in Belize. The Belizian diet seems to be a bit limited. They typically offer fry-jacks and beans and eggs for breakfast along with a juice like mango or watermelon. For lunch and supper it would be beans and rice then either chicken or fish. We also saw a fair amount of […]
So. Where was I? Oh yes, thinking about the trip. I’m going to do about half a dozen blogs on it, each focused on the sorts of things you might need to know should you have a setting in Belize, or even on say – an island in the Gulf of Mexico. Probably the first thing that hits you as you get off the plane is the air. It’s warm and moist. Although my sense of smell isn’t too good, […]
I’ve been so busy with income taxes I almost forgot to blog. I’m running a little late on the taxes this year. Something about being out of the country messed me up. I was planning on simply doing an extension, but you have to have some idea how much you will owe for that to work, and to figure it out I had to do the taxes. All I can say is thank God for tax preparation software! I managed […]
Honest, I’m not the sort of person who does stupid things like feed bears, try to pet deer or buffalo, or chase after skunks. I don’t know what got into me! Our second day at Maya Breeze Inn we decided to go snorkeling. We hired a touring company named Nite Wind (yes, that’s how they spelled it) to take us out to one of the cayes that is part of a reserve. Our tour guide’s name was Mark. He wasn’t […]
Wow! What an experience. It’s going to take a while for me to sort though my impressions and pass them along, but I’ll try to give you a general idea now. First, I can’t believe I chased a shark. More on that later. I started with a cold, am apparently getting a cold now, got a horrendous sunburn, and won’t remember any of that in years to come. We were very much the minority in Belize. The only other whites […]
I really, really wanted to say “Hi from Belize” but I’m not surprised it didn’t work out. Not that I couldn’t find any Internet access, but that I never got a chance to use it. At The Maya Breeze Inn I ran out of time while trying to get connected and had to give up. In Belmopan I couldn’t get my mother to stop at the “Internet Cafe” and merely stared wistfully at it as we went past. Several times. […]
Ok. Cross our fingers and hope nobody gets any sicker and it looks like we can still all go. I hope. It mostly depends on things like my cyst, my mothe’rs hip replacement, and my son’s strep throat. But at least we were all able to get our shots after all. For a while we weren’t so sure. We are cutting the timing a bit close. So, for anyone I haven’t already told, I’m not going to be very active […]
Gah! . Travel plans on hold. . I hate disease . Alice
Yes, we’re having some problems in the Audrey household. This time, exposure to Scarlet Fever. Probably nothing but bad timing. . Alice
It’s a quiet day today. Hardly anyone has come by my blog, and not many are likely to. On days like this I feel a wild urge to do something crazy and say something I shouldn’t. It’s like being the hair cutting heroine from Susan Elizabeth Phillips book This Heart of Mine. Down, Alice. Down! Alice
Talk about kids being cute, by son came into my office and gave me a great big hug the other day. He does this a lot so I probably shouldn’t have raised an eyebrow, but something about the words he muttered caught my attention. So I asked him what that was all about. His answer? “You’re the only one who squishes to my liking.” Awwwww. No comments about what makes me squishy, all right? Alice
We got our Girl Scout cookies seconds ago. Of course the first thing I did was rip the box open and start stuffing my mouth. I have just one question. Were these things tastier WITH the trans fats? I can’t decide Alice
My son has had the same best friend since second grade. They are now in sixth grade. Unluckily the friend hit puberty a little early and has turned into a raging teenager. That’s all fine and well. He’s a sweet kid and I don’t have to put up with the lip. It had never occurred to me it would be a problem for my son. The kid is driving my son nuts! He’s trying to pressure him into getting heelies […]
My son likes to lick. Nothing I do makes him stop. So when he licked my hand, I rubbed it all over his face. He laughed and turned his head this way and that. We were having a pretty good time with it. I told him to lick my hand again because it was drying off, and he started blowing at it to dry it faster. He was so cute going “puff, puff, puff” on my hand. So I threatened […]
