Tiga Wasa Village

We ambled away from the school and down the street to begin our tour of the village at the mayor’s building. Apparently Bali uses the same alarm system that Java does. The wooden alarm hung from a nice alcove on the front patio of the town hall. This patio area is built on the second floor. They mayor gave us a little demonstration of it’s use. From the street you see this:

Playgrounds

Somewhere along the trip to Indonesia, I started noticing playground equipment. This is a pretty good example of what I saw around. Talk about a blast from the past. Generally speaking the equipment I used as a child didn’t have much paint, but it was that same kind of metal tubes. About the time my kids were the right age to play on it, all the equipment around me had been replaced with plastic. I’m not sure if it was […]

Schools

There’s a school in Northern Bali that receives support from the travel company that ran our tour group. As part of the package we get to visit the school. On our way there we encountered a town full of marching children. They were practicing for an upcoming competition in which each class will try to march in perfect synchronization and shout cheers.

Sae Finneeeee

Say, “it’s finished”? I’d love to! But actually, there’s a bit more to go on my vacation posts. The only thing I did was get through processing all the photos. It took just short of a year. The posts will push me to over a year as I still have over twenty to go. If I only post about it twice a week that makes two and a half months of Indonesia left. That’s not counting about a hundred random […]

Windy Roads

If you look closely at the picture above, you’ll see the road we were about to reach doubling back with a motorcycle on it. The road from Ubud to Lovinia was full of those kinds of twists and turns.

Ulan Danu Bratan Temple aka Temple in the Mist

We went to Lovina from Ubud by bus. It’s a day’s drive. Apparently previous tourists had complained about being cramped in a bus for hours on end. On one hand I’m used to road trips in which you might spend up to eighteen hours with stops only long enough to refill the gas tank and hit the bathroom. To me, this wasn’t even a real full day’s travel. On the other hand I find I am less able to sit […]

The Shadow Puppet Master

This is Wayan. The name Wayan comes from the word bayan, which means shadow. He is literally a national treasure. As one of Bali’s best puppeteers, and a member of the Indonesian puppeteer association with full honors, he is well respected.

Monkey’s on the Road

The morning after meeting the shadow puppet master we left Ubud and headed for Lavina. Along the way we stopped at a wayside where monkeys were known to wander. And wander they did.

Sudi Dancing School

We were supposed to visit the Sudi Dancing School the day we flew from Java to Bali. Since we were so late, that didn’t happen. Luckily our guide was able to arrange an alternate time for us. We slipped it in between the Sacred Monkey Forest and a visit to a puppet master. They welcomed us in full regalia.

Hike up Tjampuhan Hill

Tjampuhan Hill is a popular walk that runs from the farmland on the outskirts of Ubud right into the city. It’s a fairly long but not particularly strenuous walk with some great scenery. Many locals as well as tourists frequent sections of the path. We started off in one of those typical Indonesian rural settings – a few houses and businesses interspersed by rice paddies. At this point the walk was pretty flat. I didn’t clock us, but I think […]

Coffee Plantation

We stopped off at a place that was known to grow and sell coffee. They did quite a bit more than that. For instance, the ginger plant above grew in the couple dozen yards between the parking area and the tasting area. So did a lot of other spices.
