13 Lines from Moving In

My first book is coming out next Wednesday. Here are 13 consecutive lines from it. . . “Hey, Stud Muffin—what’s your name?” Miranda asked as if it didn’t matter that they were gossiping about him. “Trigvey. Trigvey Taylor.” He threw the clothes in his arms over a suitcase. “I’m Miranda. This is Suzie. And that…” Miranda arched a long-nailed finger, “is Diane.” Diane cringed as everything from her toes to her ears went blush-hot. “Nice to meet you…Diane?” He glanced […]

13 Ways For a Boy to Get Into Trouble

The Boy, who is fifteen and in ninth grade, has been having himself a grand old time. Not that I’m saying he himself has actually done any of this, mind you. 1. Test the city curfew laws. Apparently around here it is 10 pm on a school night and 11 pm otherwise. The first time your child is caught the city will send you a nice little letter explaining the times and threatening legal action should it happen again. 2. […]

13 Icy Days

I’m used to snow. Ice? Not so much. So the weather we’ve been having lately is starting to get to me. I don’t know if it’s really been 13 days, but here are at least 13 interactions with icy days: 1. The river has almost frozen over. (See Thursday’s and Friday’s 365 posts) It’s beautiful, but you know if that much running water can freeze it’s been too cold for too long. 2. Tuesday the school called for a 2 […]

13 Points of a Storm

I got cut off from my travel plans by a storm over the holidays. This isn’t a big deal, but while I was checking out the online cameras for the road conditions I noticed that this particular storm was huge. Not only did it run the usual two or three states north and south, it covered all of Montana at a whack. You’ll notice on the map that Montana runs between 500 and 600 miles wide. Here is a set […]

13 New Years Resolutions

1. I will spend more writing than I do reading manga or playing video games. 2. I will be absolutely sure that any and all of my vehicles have the right amount of oil. 3. I will NOT drive The Boy more than 1,000 miles to visit friends. 4. I will hug The Girl every time she sticks her head out of her room and says “hi”. 5. I will actually listen to my kids, and not merely so I’ll […]

13 Gifts I’m Not Giving

In a perfect world I might give some of these: 1. A laptop for my son. I naively thought I could pick one up through eBay for around $100. Hope springs eternal. 2. An African drum to my mother. I have the drum, but she’s the one who’s been to Africa. 3. Word Peace (of course, though I’ll still hope for it.) 4. Free copies of my book to anyone who wanted one. It’s in my contract that I’m not […]

13 Almost Words

For a while now Blogger has been using an interesting “captcha” code thingy. Instead of typing in totally random letters, you’re supposed to type in something that almost looks like a word. As bad as I am at spelling, some of these might even actually be words. For instance: 1. accoras – the boy swam accoras the river. 2. aggil – that acrobat is so aggil. 3. adder – (hey, this one’s real. Right?) 4. baemers – all those rich […]

13 Random Sentences

Yep. Totally random, straight out of my brain. 1. I really should do something with the Christmas ornaments. 2. Put them up? 3. Later. 4. Too many things are “later” lately. 5. I don’t have National Novel Writing Month to blame anymore. 6. I should do more research on underwear. 7. I wonder if the kids will eat the rest of the leftover turkey if I bake it in a casserole. 8. Maybe I should have left it in the […]

13 More Pictures of Africa

Remember those pictures of animals I posted a couple of weeks ago? Animals weren’t the only things my mother took pictures of while over there. She also took these: Capetown: Capetown up close: Table Mountain in Cape Town,  literally “in” Cape Town.  The city surrounds the mountain. The view of Capetown from Table Mountain also shows beaches and another segment of town. Pin cushion protea: Cashew peddlers: Kids in leaves that danced so bus would stop and tourists would buy […]

13 Coupons

I got a coupon book in the mail for a local grocery store  The glossy cover bills the coupons as “Your Holiday List for Less”.  So I eagerly looked through for anything I needed for Thanksgiving, like spinach or corn meal.  Nothing.  Not a single couple worked for me.  Ok, so now I’m feeling weird.  Am I the only one who eats what I eat for the holidays.? Or rather, I’m I the only one who doesn’t eat what they […]

13 Pictures of Animals in Africa

A while back I did a Thursday Thirteen in which I mentioned the two-headed giraffe my mother took a picture of while on vacation in Africa. A few of you said you’d like to see the pictures. Here thirteen of the ones of animals she sent me: There are many different types of antelopes. The Impala is sometimes referred to McDonalds of the savanna -fast food with an M on the rear. Baboon and baby at Cape of Good Hope […]

TT: New Monitor

My old computer monitor died about a couple of weeks ago. It has always been a little iffy, but it went right in to “this screen will never show anything more that a gray flicker” mode and no amount of whacking would fix it. I had to get a new one. 1. My new monitor is 18.5″. The old one was 14″. I didn’t care much at the time I bought it, but I’m noticing the difference. 2. I’m the […]
