We go through a lot of batteries in the Audrey household. I mean a LOT. Most of that has to do with teenagers and their gadgets, but some of it comes from old digital cameras and such. You aren’t supposed to throw the old ones in the trash here, so we keep them in a huge jar marked “Dead Bats”. I’ll tell you the story on that some other time. It didn’t take long for the jar to over flow, […]
Yesterday Mama Zen asked a serious question, and me being me I gave a flip answer. Sadly, I do a lot of that. The thing is, I think she deserves a better answer. The question is why do people pay more attention to their failures with respect to the people we try to save than to their successes? For instance, if some nurses came across a traffic accident and managed to save the passenger, but lost the driver, why talk […]
I used to live in a house with a great fireplace. I love having a fireplace. It gives me peace of mind to know I can light a fire whenever the weather overwhelms my furnace – something that has happened to me on several occasions. This one was particularly nice because the lay out of the house fed the heat to the otherwise unheated upstairs. It had an insert to keep the chimney from turning into a huge energy drain […]
My Sister in Law died a few hours ago. I mentioned her several months ago. She was diagnosed with terminal cancer. It’s actually quite amazing that she managed to live even this long after the original prognoses. We weren’t particularly close. I’ll certainly miss her, and am feeling a kind of missed-step hollowness, but I won’t be shedding many tears. I won’t discuss the details of her life or death here. I would like to say she led a full […]
I’ve been busy with this NaNoWriMo thing and neglecting my friends here at the restaurant. Between trying to crank a book out this quickly, having relatives come visit, and simply getting through the daily grind, I’ve been strapped for time. Is anyone else out there feeling the Holiday pinch yet?
Doesn’t this look like it should have some words on it? Maybe Merry Christmas, Thursday Thirteen, Talk to Me Tuesday, or Space for Rent. Just seems to me something is missing. What do you think? Should I add some words? If so, what should I say?
Beauty isn’t just in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes the beholder has to go out looking for beauty. When was the last time you stopped walking long enough to move closer to a moss covered log? When was the last time you stepped back from the enchantment of the closer view to see what was beyond?
Water is a big deal here in Montana. Not simply how much water is flowing through the rivers, but how it flows is heavily regulated. Seriously, you’re supposed to fill in an environmental impact statement before you move rocks around in the riverbed. However, a lot of people don’t. Rugged individualism is still alive and well around here. So you end up with stuff like in the picture above. People (generally college students) reconfigured the river bed to make places […]
I mean, what side do you sleep on? I have a friend whose doctor told her not to sleep on her left side anymore. From now on she has to sleep on the right. I’ve been doing something like that for years now, along with sleeping on a rolled up towel for a pillow (chiropractor’s orders). All this time I thought I was just weird. Now I’m thinking it might be fairly common. Do you sleep any particular way? Have […]
I’ve been playing around with my sidebar lately. You may have noticed a couple of odd “badges” appearing there. On is NaNoWriMo and the other is NaBloPoMo. Unless you’ve encountered them before, you probably have no idea what’s going on. So I’ll explain. Every November the writing community gears up for one of our biggest challenges – to write an entire novel in a month. Whether you write Romance, or Science Fiction, or great literature you can participate. You don’t […]
What do you think? Frankly, I’m a little disappointed. Even though I’d heard many, many authors complain about how little control they had over their covers, and knew they also received information request sheets from the art department, when I got mine, I dared imagine what kind of cover I would like. This isn’t it. Not that this is bad. It simply isn’t what I was hoping for. For instance, it doesn’t really look like much when you shrink it […]
I’m gearing up to write a book about a woman who has amnesia. Generally speaking, I don’t like to read books that include amnesia because writer’s tend to use it as a crutch, rather than exploring the nature of memory and the problems of those who can’t trust theirs. Since my own memory tends to be a bit hap-hazard, I have a good idea where I want to go with this. Still, I would welcome your input. Can you trust […]
We used to buy our beef locally, a side at a time. I have no idea if we got the left side or the right side, but I used to look out my window at work to see the cow in question looking back. It’s a rancher’s thing to be proud of the ability to look lunch in the eye without flinching, and a relief to me to know what I ate was well cared for. There are all kinds […]
Anyone know what an article of clothing called a “wife beater” is? I was reading a vampire book and ran across this passage: “As Butch stepped into the main room, he got a load of Rhage’s ensemble for the night: Black leather trench coat fell from his shoulders to his ankles. Black wife-beater was tucked into leathers. Shitkickers topped him out at six-eight or so.” I was sure it was a kind of shoe, but that doesn’t fit here. So […]
Would you yell at a kid for forgetting something? How about for forgetting everything? This morning The Girl informed me that she did not remember to turn in her receipt on school picture day, which was yesterday. Does that sound weird? See, the company that does school pictures for my kids has the option of ordering online. Which I did. But instead of simply matching her name to their records, she has to actually provide the bar-coded print out that […]
