I handed the marked up copies of their manuscripts back to Lisa and Ben. Ironically, they had both suffered from the same writing issue this time. Too many characters caused confusion.
“It’s not impolite when you’re livid,” Gene said. He thought it was obvious. “Get out!” Ben leaned away so far he nearly fell off Gene’s bed. One hand crunched on the stack of scrap paper full of attempted lyrics. His goofy grin made Gene feel like laughing.
Anywhere is fine Among the skyscrapers around the Capital Square Or the tall grasses by Lake Monona I will search for you everywhere As long as your heart continues to turn toward mine When your camera takes you away I will wait When your sails can’t hold wind I’ll call them for you Anytime is fine I’ll rush to your side through snow drifts or rain I’ll hold your books or your hand As long as you are still mine […]
Emma hated the halting side of herself. When she and Lisa reached Ben’s bedroom, Lisa walked right in like it was her own home. Emma hovered in the doorway, wondering if it was really ok to go into Ben’s bedroom when he was downstairs, even if he did say for them to go first. Lisa walked right up to his desk, opened a drawer, and pulled out a notebook. “Well?” She looked over her shoulder. “Don’t you want to see […]
“Do you have to be so brutal about it?” Ben emphasized the word brutal, knowing full well that Lisa would know what he meant. Not just that she was being rude to poor Emma. “Is that your word of the day?” Lisa smirked.
Emma flopped onto the old couch in the den of Suzie’s house with an audible sigh. She was so lucky the place was vacant today. Or at least the old witch who liked to tell her she didn’t live here wasn’t around, like being a renter gave her special privileges or something.
“You love me?” Sophie stared at her husband in stunned surprise. Even when he knew she’d tricked him into marriage? He’d known it all along? All these years she’d turned herself into a doormat just so he wouldn’t leave her for his high school sweetheart. All for nothing.
Clearly the love of his life had no intention of discussing their problems. She sat in his chair, sipping coffee and reading his newspaper. Only, now that she paid for it, maybe the paper was hers. He had to give her that. But he didn’t buy into her plan of simply ignoring him until his very existence faded into nothing.
Sophie carried her coffee and newspaper to the recliner with a limp. She had a blister at the back of her heel from her new shoes. Luckily she had today and tomorrow off to let it heal. It felt good to simply relax for once. Though she loved her job, she wouldn’t mind a little more time to herself.
Ethan paced from the doorway to the kitchen to the front door and back while trying to ignore Gabriel’s phone conversation with Peter. It was a short track as the kitchen let off from the living room. Really, there wasn’t much to the house. Just the living room and kitchen in the front of the house, then a hall that let out to three bedrooms and a bathroom. He’d been so proud of himself when they bought it. It might […]
Gene held the music shop door open for Tracy. He followed close on her heels as she made a beeline for the guitars hanging on the far wall. “Technically it was Aunt Stephanie who gave me the money. Mom didn’t say one way or another about getting a guitar. She just said I could have some money to play with over summer vacation. She probably thought I’d go for movies and burgers. I was supposed to get a little at […]
Normally Bruce would have been sneaking looks at Gene all through the practice session because of that missing money. This time he got so caught up in writing a song with Emma that he almost forgot. Almost.
Drew stood outside the building. He had a wire, but it only went to a recorder hidden under his bomber jacket. His partners didn’t know he was here. They thought the drug king pin worked out of a warehouse somewhere on the edges of Albuquerque. Drew’s informant said the man could be found here and he could get in by saying, “Tell El Jefe that Dave sent me.” The dogs were chained. They buzzed him through the gate when he […]
Tracy and Emma beat him to the practice room. Bruce had tried to get there first because he’d been in a rush to leave after the last practice session and had forgotten to pack away his Casio. It might not be the best synthesizer he owned, but he still didn’t want people messing with it.
Emma got to the practice room before any of the other band members. She sat on the chair in front of Kate’s drums for a few minutes. She was tempted to give the drums a thump, but Kate would probably have a hissy fit. She didn’t even like it when her boyfriend, Justin, borrowed them, and he actually knew what he was doing.
