Suzie’s House 86: To Break a Mother’s Heart

This starts where last week ended. “Fhuuuu!” Suzie wasn’t sure which of the culprits in front of her had almost sworn – Ben or Miranda. The two of them had whirled around to come crashing together, shoulder-to-shoulder, doing their best to block her view of the counter. It was a futile effort. Suzie already knew there were recipe cards scattered all around the file. Her file. Her special, third generation recipe file which she kept locked up in her desk. […]

Suzie’s House 85: Home Sweet Home

Everything was weird. They hadn’t caught the bad guys, but all of a sudden Mom wanted him back. She wouldn’t tell him why either, but she’d glance at Drew every time Ben asked. Ben wasn’t sure if he liked Drew for making Mom take him back, or if he was still mad at him for, well, not for making him go but….. Plus there was something going on between Vin and Miranda. Maybe there was something going on there before […]

Suzie’s House 84: Reconciliation

Suzies’s House is an on-going story. You can find a new episode here in Alice’s Restaurant every Friday. To see previous episodes click on the highlighted words, or on the Suzie’s House category in my side bar. Sean grinned as he dropped into the front seat of a 68 Camero. Some idiot actually left it out on the street without locking it. Admittedly it was a rusted bucked of bolts, but it was a classic bucket of bolts.. He smashed […]

Suzie’s House 83: Heavy Weighs the Crown

Previously in Suzie’s House, Ben was given an unfair F in class. He ran out of the classroom. Now Gene and Lisa, a straight A student, are going to the principal. Principal Greear had a meeting with the school board coming up in little over an hour when Lisa and her friends walked in. Between the problems with the copy machine, Gertie’s nagging about the back up in paperwork while he was at conference, and the refusal of the school […]

Suzie’s House 82: Breaking Point – The First

Ben knew what to expect already, but he’d been real good about this paper. He checked his spelling twice and had Lisa help him with his grammar. The topic was “Write about something you care about.” He’d done that. Just once he wanted to get a good grade out of English. Mrs. D. took her sweet time handing out the papers. When she came even with his desk, she stopped. She stared at the top sheet in her pile for […]

Suzie’s House 81: Mrs. D’s Revenge

Deloris Dieter, affectionately known as Mrs. D by so many students she couldn’t possibly be expected to keep track of them all, thumped the stack of papers against the tabletop to even it out. She set the stack in her briefcase, and closed her grade book. Another day’s job well done. She might not have a lot else to show for her life; no family like most of the other teachers, no awards or accolades like Mrs. Grant constantly received, […]

Suzie’s House 80: In Comparison

Up, B, down. Splat. The little skateboarding figure on the TV screen hit the ground with a spattering of red droplets that disappeared almost as soon as they appeared. “No, no no!” Gene yelled. “You aren’t doing it right.” A week ago Ben would have been upset if over-sized, bad-rep Gene yelling at him. Today he curled his lip and snarled, “Lay off.” Gene crossed his arms in a huff. Ben glanced out the window. It was already dark. He […]

Suzie’s House 79: Nothing Has Changed, Indeed

In last week’s episode, Suzie and Drew became lovers. For Drew, it was a momentous experience. It changed the way he thought of Suzie, himself, and their relationship. He is ready for something serious. But who knows what Suzie is thinking? Suzie lay in Drew’s bed and stared at the ceiling. “Nothing has changed,” She turned her head to look Drew in the eye. “Just because we made love doesn’t mean I’m going to do anything differently.” He gave a […]

Suzie’s House 78: In the Heat of the Moment

This is actually a direct continuation of the last two Suzie’s House episodes. If you haven’t read them yet, I recommend doing so before reading this. Suzie’s House 76: On Suzie’s Mind  and Suzie’s House 77: Men! Drew fought the urge to chase after Suzie for two eternal seconds. He stood in the kitchen, his back to Vin – who was being quiet the way someone who doesn’t want to get shot will be quiet during a bank robbery – […]

Suzie’s House 77: Men!

We resume the story from where it left off last week with Suzie and Drew together in the kitchen. It had been so long since anyone had comforted Suzie. Thinking back, Suzie couldn’t remember anyone comforting her quite this way, ever. Drew’s arms around her were strong and firm, but held her loosely enough that if she really wanted free, she could simply stand. Instead, she curled up in his lap like a cat.

Suzie’s House 76: On Suzie’s Mind

Drew followed the sound of pots and pans clattering to the kitchen. It seemed Suzie could draw him in as easily as he could draw her. Except in his case, he simply wanted to know what was bothering her. She stood by the stove with a cast iron skillet in her hand . Tears ran down her face unabated. When she saw him she rubbed at them with the back of her wrist, and refused to look him in the […]

Suzie’s House 75: One Toe Over the Line

When we last saw Ben, he wasn’t feeling very welcome at home. He’s been shaky ever since his parents divorced and is much worse since recent events forced him out of his mother’s house. Lately a young tough named Gene has shown an interest in him. “Hey, Ben. You wanna hang out.” Gene wrapped one beefy arm over Ben’s shoulders as they walked down the hall at school. He was so big Ben thought he was going to smother him, […]

Suzie’s House 74: Decisions, Decisions

We continue from last week when Sean and Joseph, the red headed men, were nearly caught by the woman who lives in the apartment in which they’ve been squatting. . Sean clutched the laptop to his side, as much to staunch the pain as to safeguard the computer. The wound was well on its way to heeling, but with the exertion of chasing Joe down the fire escape, it might open up again. Even as he ran for his life, […]

Suzie’s House 73: Time to Go

This episode continues from quite some time back when the red headed men found a place to hide while recovering from their wounds . “What do you think you’re doing?” Joseph balled his fists so he wouldn’t just yank the laptop away from Sean and fling it across the room. He could see it now, fancy silver case skidding through artsy-fartsy, hand-made junk. The longer they crashed in this stranger’s apartment, the uglier the primitive little figurines ranging from Hindu […]

Suzie's House 72: If the Shoe Fits

In the episode from last week, Ben tried to come home, but Suzie couldn’t let him stay. Suzie might not have caught Miranda red handed if she hadn’t felt so bad about the way Ben stormed off. She felt like crying, and didn’t want to do it in front of anyone, so headed for her room. At the top of the stairs, she saw Miranda sneaking into Ben’s room. “Miranda, what are you doing?” Suzie reached her son’s room just […]
