It was only a few months between the day I watched two red haired men run out of Cindy’s apartment during a party and the next time I ran into Suzie’s son, Ben, but it seemed like a couple of years had gone by. In that time, Ben had nearly been abducted by those red haired men, seen them arrested, been accused of insanity by a crazy teacher, sent his own father to jail for attempted murder, rescued his best […]
“Things are going to change right now. Beginning with you.” Mrs. H said it with that straight-up-honest, kind, mother type way of hers, but Gene knew she didn’t mean to be comforting. Good thing too, because her words put a chill down his back like having someone you really didn’t like staring at you too much. Gene swallowed hard, and waited for the punch.
Drew finished taping a box full of books with a loud shruuunnnkkkuunkkk off the roll. He gave Suzie a nod as he hefted a couple of boxes and beat a hasty retreat. She took a few of extra minutes staring at his beige bedspread to pull herself together, then stood with the intention of going down to the kitchen. “Mom, I need to talk to you.” Ben burst into Drew’s room. Gene and the girl, Lisa, followed right behind. “Sure,” […]
So now what? Gene had lots of power when he stormed out of Mrs. H’s house, but once off the porch he lost a lot of it. He didn’t know what to do with himself. The thought of going “home” didn’t sit too good. Didn’t he already decide he was never going back? With the foster parent thing an all, it maybe wasn’t even legal. Besides, it seemed like changing his mind made him into a wuss. The beating he […]
“I can’t believe you did that,” Lisa said. “How can you blame Gene for wanting a place of his own?” “A place.” When Ben thought of a place, he saw a bachelor’s apartment full of junk, beer, and women’s underwear like he’d seen in a movie or two. So far as he could guess, his mom’s house would never look anything like that. “This is his home, isn’t it?” Lisa was on a roll and showing no signs of letting […]
“Right.” Gene repeated to himself as the door closed on Mrs. Hammacker and Mr. Banks “Right. I’ll just… wander around like a ghost until you’re good and ready to talk to me. Yeeeeah.” He went down the hall to Ben’s bedroom, feeling like raw hamburger. He was so messed up about how Mrs. Hammacker yelled at him, that he forgot about Ben and Lisa until he got there. There they were, shoulder to shoulder, leaning over Ben’s desk. She laughed […]
“What’s going on?” Suzie tapped the door to Drew’s room lightly. She could see quite well what was going on. Drew was packing. Her question was why was Gene helping him? “Oh. I was just.” Gene sprung to his feet. He flushed slightly and glanced around the floor like he might have misplaced something there. He glanced out the door with a wrinkled brow. “I’ll go.”
Good thing he automatically put his pants on first, or it would have been really, really embarrassing when Ben walking into the room with Lisa. “Oh! Oh, I’m so sorry.” Lisa went bright red. She put her hand to her face like she’d seen something she shouldn’t have. His BVDs maybe?
“Drew is leaving?” Miranda couldn’t believe it. She stared at Suzie then at Ben in turns. “Why on earth is he leaving?” “Work,” Ben said morosely. He slumped over the kitchen table, one wrist wrapped over the top of his head. Suzie nodded. “His job here was temporary. He’s been re-assigned.” “Pft. As if that was reason enough.” Miranda didn’t wait for Suzie or Ben to respond. She marched upstairs to set Drew straight.
For those who don’t read the newsletter, last week Suzie woke up to a wonderful morning with her beloved Drew only to have him tell her he is leaving. He is an FBI Agent who was only assigned to the Madison WI office pending an investigation into the internet-based flash-crime ring run by the Smash Master. Now that the Smash Master is behind bars, his job is done. He leaves for New Mexico at the end of the week. “Mom?” […]
Sorry, this one is entirely in the newsletter. I know, I usually put the first few paragraphs, before I get to the steamy stuff, here in the blog then the whole thing on the newsletter. I have my reasons for making an exception. It’s been nearly a year since I sent anything out on the newsletter. My deepest apologies to those readers who have requested more of them. If you have any problems receiving it, or if you are a […]
“Don’t worry.” Gene clapped Ben on the back. “I won’t get in your way.” The relief on Ben’s face was almost comical. Before Gene could burst his bubble with a dig, Lisa came back. “I’m sorry. It didn’t work.” She looked bummed. “What did you try,” Ben asked.
“Why didn’t you give the tickets to me,” Gene asked. He and Lisa stood under a street light, or maybe it should be called a sidewalk light since it wasn’t near any street. It was along the walk way leading up to the coliseum where ShapeShifter was going to play. They were waiting for Ben, who was talking to some guys unloading a truck. “You were busy at the time.” Lisa shrugged.
My regular readers have probably noticed a new arc in the story. That’s because I have a special treat for you this week. Susan Helene Gottfried and I have combined our writing talents to bring you a two-sided story. Once you’ve read this, click here to see the other side of things. “This is great!” Miranda did a little hop, almost bumping one of the security guards keeping the audience away from the stage. She had really outdone herself on […]
“I don’t have to go!” Lisa stood on the front porch a beamed. “I don’t have to leave town after all. So, um… about the tickets…” Ben just about swallowed his tongue. He even choked a little. “Tickets?” he said in a tight voice, thinking about how happy Miranda looked when he gave them to her. “You don’t have to give them back,” Lisa said real quick. She held her hands up and waved them like to say she wouldn’t […]
