Suzie’s House 218 : Sweet Sound

A beautiful Fender Stratocaster hung on the wall behind the counter. Gene liked the way the middle of the body shown all gold with a dark brown edge. He could so easily see himself on stage with something like that. But that wasn’t what he was here for.

Suzie’s House 217 : Almost Done

“You have been so helpful, Gene.” Suzie handed him the channel locks. She’d always found the channel lock wrench much more helpful than a regular plumber’s wrench, but she’d given Gene the choice. That his preferences ran along the same lines as hers pleased her. “I’m pretty sure this last job will put you over the line.”

Suzie’s House 216 : How to Alter a Fond and Tranquil Moment

“Hey, Babe.” Vin settled on the lawn chair next to Miranda. With a beer in one hand, and the grill’s special, long-handled spatula in the other. He stared cross the backyard at the same row of trees and hulking Victorian house’s backside that Miranda had been staring at. “Pretty, isn’t it?” He waited for a few minutes to see what she said. Miranda wasn’t really the kind to wax rhapsodic over the turning of Autumn leaves. She probably hadn’t noticed […]

Suzie’s House 215 : But Mom, It’s My Flashdrive

“Mom!” Ben just about flipped out when he saw what she was doing. “How’d you get that?” “What? This flashdrive? It was sitting on my desk.” “But… but…” Ben swallowed hard, trying to think and not doing a good job of it.

Suzie’s House 214 : Anyone Can Write a Book

She was doing it. She was really doing it. Lisa typed away on her laptop, watching the words fill the screen. Well, maybe fill was too strong a word. They appeared. She had no idea where they came from. They were simply there when she reached for them. It had taken her the better part of an hour, but she’d managed to come up with enough of the phantom sentences to cover one page.

Suzie’s House 213 : Big Idea

“Humph!” The idiot. How hard could it be to sit down and write a story? Lisa stomped her way down the hall, feeling awkward for being in Ben’s house after saying something she knew would make him mad, as if the house itself were telling her she didn’t belong here. “Hey, Lisa.” Tracy came out of Gene’s room. She had a rosy look to her cheeks, and Lisa suspected she and Gene had been kissing. Gene came to the doorway, […]

Suzie’s House 212 : Waving Around

Lisa laughed harder than Ben thought she should, but he couldn’t say anything because he meant for her to laugh when he told her about fighting Gene over who got to do the dishes, so… yeah.

Suzie’s House 211: That’s My Dirty Dish!

Right after dinner, Ben carried the serving dishes into the kitchen and started washing. “Mom? How many points did you say doing dishes is worth?” “Five, but you have to do the hand wash too.” She came in with the dish of macaroni and tuna. “Ok.” He could do hand wash. He thought. He’d always had help before, but he knew the basics. He opened the dishwasher to find it half full of dirties and started the water running to […]

Suzie’s House 210 : First Step of a Block

Ben sat down in front of his mother’s computer. He pressed the power button and waited while the computer busied itself with coming to life – a combination of flashing lights and sound.

Suzie’s House 209: The First Clue

Fascinated by the way his footsteps echoed off the concrete floor and walls of the hall in the club’s basement, Drew stopped. It shouldn’t have surprised him when the hollow sound also stopped. It was as if he still had China Black in his blood stream. Or maybe as if he was never going to recover from it. He stood there right outside the room where he was supposed to meet up with Dave, unable to move.

Suzie’s House 208 : Drewing The Line

“He’s useless. Completely useless.” Toby wedged the heel of one cowboy boot against the bottom rung of the kitchen chair where Drew sat and stared at the FBI agent as if he were an interesting bug. Drew didn’t seem to notice. “Not completely,” Maria said to be fair “He hasn’t blown his cover yet.” “Is it not evident to you that he’s so far gone it doesn’t matter?”

Suzie’s House 207 : Red Handed

Miranda paused at the top of the staircase. Normally she’d simply go to Vin’s room without turning any lights on. Or maybe tonight she’d go to her own room, since she didn’t want to argue with him again over all the overtime she’d been putting in. But this time she heard a furtive sound at the other end of the hall. There was someone in Suzie’s room who shouldn’t be there.

Suzie’s House 206 : The Rescue Mission

The floorboard creaked. Holding his breath, Ben froze, one foot in the dark hall, the other in his mother’s bedroom. He had been so sure that spot on the floor was ok. Mom stopped snoring for a minute, but then he could hear her breathing slow and even. That counted as asleep, right? Close enough. He took another step into her bedroom.

Suzie’s House 205 : Seek and Ye Shall Find

It wasn’t there. How could it not be there? Ben knew good and well that he left his flash drive – the secret one he bought with his own money without telling anyone about – should be wedged between the back leg of his desk and the wall. So where was it?

Suzie’s House 204: A Day in the Life of a Boarding House Owner

Suzie shoved the business end of her canister vacuum under Gene’s bed, and bumped something. Bending over, she flipped back the covers to see an amplifier. An amp? When did he get that? From where? She certainly hadn’t bought him one. Getting down on her knees, she looked a bit further to see if he’d somehow come by an electric guitar to go with the amp, but besides a mountain of wadded school assignments mixed with old wrappers and miscellaneous […]
