“Remorse? Every day o my life I experience remorse over something. Have you ever taken a faithful old dog to the veterinary to be put to death? That remorse lives with you for the rest of your life.” Almost done with this one. It’s taken over a year, but I’m nearly there now. MizB of Should Be Reading hosts Teaser Tuesday. This week I’m taking a quote from a free fiction post from The Serialists rolls. “Never in my life or death did I imagine I’d be listening to a banshee complain about her lack of breasts,” said Sebastian, sounding vaguely bewildered and dismayed at the same time. “How do you end up involved in conversations like this? You’re like a magnet for the bizarre.” MizB of Should Be Reading hosts Teaser Tuesday. Grab your current read, open to a random […]
Normal human beings were having a lovely evening eating kung pao chicken and sushi. There probably wasn’t a woman in the place who had ever broken into a house to search for evidence of a murder. “Your blood type is AB negative, and you voted Republican in the last election,” I said, opening my front door. “Coffee?” “Do you know how I take it?” he asked sarcastically. “Black. Two sugars.” He stared at me. I shrugged. “Lucky guess.” MizB of Should Be Reading hosts Teaser Tuesday. This book is about an actress who holds the world record for shortest adult. To put this on in context, I’ve included the whole paragraph below. Fantasy is the art of not being picky. The world simply changed when I wasn’t looking — when I was out eating a cheeseburger, maybe, or buying a magazine or catching a flick in Westwood — so that when I got back it was utterly different, an alien place filled with people I’d never known and customs as inscrutable to me as the control panel on my VCR MizB of Should Be Reading hosts Teaser Tuesday. Like every man aboard that ship, he was convinced that he was engaged upon a sacred mission to defend human liberty. Of the sixty-eight men who left the Choptank, counting Mark Steed, only two owned slaves, but all were persuaded that only by enforcing slavery permanently could the freedom of the nation be preserved. The scene: a sassy mama surrounded by a kitchen full of back-talking kids. Her friend comes over to talk. She tells a daughter to cook dinner, and this is what she gets: “Why I got to do dinner? It’s Sugar’s turn!” “Cause Sugar at Miss Celia’s and you want a live to see third grade.” That’s my last teaser from this one. I loved it. The book, I mean. 🙂 MizB of Should Be Reading hosts Teaser Tuesday. Grab your […]
This is from the point of view of a maid. In the kitchen, I fix some grits without no seasoning, and put them baby marshmallows on top. I toast the whole thing to make it a little crunchy. Then I garnish it with a cut-up strawberry. That’s all a grit is, a vehicle. For whatever it is you rather be eating. I’ve been making good progress on this one and enjoying it very much. In the thirties, Steinbeckian Okies in Guthriesque droves staggered dispiritedly from he Redwood Forests to the Gulfstream Waters. In the fifties, Kerouacian beatniks tugged on lives that were just one endless run-n sentence after another. This is a strange one. I loved Milagro Bean Fields Wars, and thought this would be a continuation, but I was wrong. Not sure if I will finish it. MizB of Should Be Reading hosts Teaser Tuesday.
