Miranda paused at the top of the staircase. Normally she’d simply go to Vin’s room without turning any lights on. Or maybe tonight she’d go to her own room, since she didn’t want to argue with him again over all the overtime she’d been putting in. But this time she heard a furtive sound at the other end of the hall. There was someone in Suzie’s room who shouldn’t be there.

Potholes
It’s been a long, hard winter. The roads have suffered horribly. What gets to me isn’t so much that we have so many and such large potholes. It’s the way the potholes run in lines like ruts. How are your streets? Lost any tires yet?

The floorboard creaked. Holding his breath, Ben froze, one foot in the dark hall, the other in his mother’s bedroom. He had been so sure that spot on the floor was ok. Mom stopped snoring for a minute, but then he could hear her breathing slow and even. That counted as asleep, right? Close enough. He took another step into her bedroom.
